LOs won't drink anything from a cup

I've been trying to wean from BFing but Audrey was sick and wouldn't drink anything except what she got from BFing. Now that she's feeling better, neither she nor Evelyn will drink from a cup. They are both able to drink from straw cups and sippy cups. They both like milk and water. Nothing works. I really want to wean but I'm afraid they're not getting enough fluids. We have a pedi appointment Wednesday and I will ask about this, but for now, does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried different cups, different liquids, different temperatures and nothing works. Its as if they know weaning is happening and are boycotting any non-boob milk. Oh....and pumping is not an option.

Re: LOs won't drink anything from a cup

  • Might be slightly different, but we stopped formula & bottles cold turkey with DS#1. He was "on strike" for a week or two - refused milk, water. We kept him hydrated with applesauce, and other water-packed fruits. He finally realized there was no turning back and started guzzling his milk and water. I felt awful for the first few days, but DH kept me in check, and it was worth it.
  • Oh, and he ate yogurt and/or cheese everyday for his dairy.

  • I have nothing helpful to add here but I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS on nursing your twins for a year!  You were always so helpful to me with all my BF questions, and I think it's so awesome that you BF your girls for a whole year.  Now I only BF in the morning and at night, but I was always inspired by you.

I hope weaning the girls goes ok for you and you find a solution, but YOU ROCK!

  • Yes congrats!!!!! A year is a big deal as a MOM. Have you tried giving the stuff to them straight from the glass w/o a straw or sippy top? My girls are just getting off bottles and keep getting picky about drinking out of stuff but seem to get a kick out of drinking water from mommies glass!

    Embarrassed  Awww.....thank you.

The early months of BFing are SO hard. I found a lot of support here when I first started BFing and I wanted to do the same for new MoMs who wanted to try BFing. It means a lot that you found it helpful. Good for you for still BFing! I'm glad you found what works for you and your LOs!

  • I introduced a sippy cup at 6 months.  I tried all different kinds.  It took DS about 6 months to TRULY drink from a cup and drink it all!  I know your babies are older, but hopefully with a little more time they will give in and start drinking.  Just keep trying.
