3rd Trimester

Vacation at 6 months? Thoughts?

So i'm only 16 weeks, but thought I would post this in the 3rd trimester board for a more accurate response.

My family has always gone on a cruise in April (for the past 3 years).  It just seems to work with everyones schedule.  Well, when i found out I was pregnant, i was so sad at the thought that i wouldn't be able to go this year.

But now i'm kind of curious if i still can.  I would be 27 weeks along at the time of the cruise.  I've tried talking my family into going in early march (about 23 weeks), but it just doesn't seem to work for anyones schedule (or our bank account for that matter).

Or i've even though, maybe i can talk them into just going to all-inclusive resort instead of a cruise.

What are your ladies thoughts on a resort or a cruise at 6 months?

All thoughts are VERY much appreciated!

  • I have had zero morning sickness, so if it were me, I'd probably go if it otherwise made sense in terms of the financial and time-off situations.

If you've had any morning sickness, I'd worry it would trigger it and you wouldn't enjoy the experience and possibly be miserable.  I don't really get motion sickness but the 1 cruise I went on gave me motion sickness for a good day and a half and all I did was stay in bed and feel sorry for myself during that time!

I think a trip to a resort on land is a safer bet if you can talk your family into it!  GL!

  • I went on vacations / traveled throughout both my pregnancies until 32 weeks (per my dr). I've never gone on a cruise so can't speak to that specifically but as long as your dr is okay with it, I don't see why you wouldn't or couldn't travel. Ask your dr.

  • Most cruise lines won't allow you to cruise past 23 weeks. I would check with your cruise liner's policies first.

An all inclusive resort might be a better option for you at 27 weeks. You should also talk to your doctor about travel at that point.

  • I have had ZERO morning sickness or anything.  honestly, so far, i don't even feel pregnant yet.  i'm just beginning to show a little and have only gained 4 lbs. And all cruises i've been on before, i have not had any motion sickness.

  • I didn't go on vacation per say at 27 weeks, but we did attend an out of town wedding at that time.  It was an overly busy wedding b/c of all the driving that had to be done, but overall I was fine.

The only thing was that I didn't make it till midnight to stay for the whole reception.  (We typically are drinking & dancing in our pre-pregnant lives).  Didn't do much dancing either.  But I'm sure you'll be fine for a cruise or resort.  That should be relaxing!

  • I agree- my first worry would be motion sickness.  I'd try to get them to do an all inclusive resort instead.  Plus, most cruise lines don't allow pregnant women past 23 weeks.  You'll have to check with them and get clearance from your Dr. too I believe.

I was also super tired still around that time, and starting to be uncomfortable with a growing belly.  I'd worry about the smallness of the cruise ship (showers, bathrooms, hallways, etc.) vs. how big I felt. (at 27 weeks, there's no sucking in that baby bump!)  Stick out tongue  But if you don't feel that way, by all means have a fun vacation with your family!  Hope this helps!

  • Cruise ships have firm restrictions on pregnant women boarding their boats - for most you can't be past 24 weeks, for some it's earlier than that. So you'll want to consider that.
Personally, I'd be fine at a resort at this point in my pregnancy and it would have been really NBD when I was six months pregnant.

  • I didn't even think about cruises not allowing you go after so many weeks, but makes sense.  plus the thoughts of the showers and rooms, do seem pretty small all of a sudden!

So i think that's been ruled out.  but seems like pretty much everyone things a resort would be good at 27 weeks?  I just want to make sure that i'll be able to have fun and not be feeling sorry for myself or super uncomfortable when sitting on the beach.

  • I know several crusie lines that will not let you cruise past your 24w, so look into that!

I'm a huuuuge fan of the beach, so I would totally go, as long as you make sure to stay well hydrated and to not overheat!  I was considering flying from CT to Colorado next weekend (when I'll be 32 weeks) and I checked with my Dr and they said that since my pregnancy has been free of complications, they'd be fine with me going as long as the airlines allowed me.

So check with the airlines first, and then other tips the Dr's office gave me were to drink water and walk around the plane a lot, and to bring my full pregnancy-related medical history with me, just in case anything happened while away, so the hospital there would have all my info.

Great, now I want to sit on the beach!! Crying

  • I cruised with DH at 21 weeks.Had a GREAT time, just couldn't drink:(  It was through carnival and the rule is that you cannnot be more than 24 weeks gestation at debarkation(returning from the cruise).  So if you will be 27 weeks you will NOT be allowed to cruise!  I'm pretty sure most if not all cruise lines have the same restrictions.  It's a liability for them in case you go into labor!!  GL!!

  • DH and I took our babymoon with #1 when I was 6 months. We went to Vegas and hiked around the rocks in Utah. And it was the middle of July. Aside from needing boatloads of water, I was fine. If you've had a pretty easy pg so far and are low-risk, it shouldn't be a problem at all taking a little vacay around then. Have fun.

This.  I am not a cruise person anyway, but just in case something went wrong I would want to be on land and not stuck out at sea.  However if my dr was fine with it I would have no problem doing a beach vacation at that point.

  • Go for it!  We're going to Disney in 2 wks.  I'll be 30 weeks.  I'm in pain, my abdomen and right leg, last week was in tears almost every night.  But ya know what?  I'd be in pain whether I was at home or on vacation.  I figure I'd rather be on vacation!  We'll take it slow and do a lot in the morning when I'm still feeling good.  When I start to feel crappy I'll head back to the hotel by myself or with DH and DD and we can go hang by the pool.  At least I won't be in the freezing cold.
  • I was around 27 weeks at Christmas time. I flew, I was in a car for hours, etc. I felt fine. Then again, I've had a really easy pregnancy.

    I'd say go for it!

  • We did a European cruise at around 14 weeks. I had to provide a letter from my dr stating my due date to ensure I would not be further along than 23 weeks. As others have said most cruise lines will not allow you to sail if you will be 23 weeks at the end of your cruise (and you must provide documentation).

I would definitely look for a land vacation option at that point though. Just think of where you are going and what kind of medical care you could get there. Personally, I'd be very selective with Caribbean Islands and exotic locations due to the availability and quality of medical care.

Also, try to get a travel insurance policy that will cover pregnancy related medical care or cancellations.

  • I went on a 10-day vacation at 25 weeks. I was fine. Flying was no problem (other than the fact that I needed to pee all the time) and neither was the rest of the travel. As long as you're not going anywhere you'd need vaccines and your Dr has cleared you, I think you should go.

  • I just came back from vacation a week ago so I was 25-26 weeks pregnant and everything was great! I say go for it but do check with your doctor first that you're not having any pre term labor or anything else that would concern him/her
