F/U on DS ENT app

quick backstory... We have all sorts of concerns with Ds such as apnea and adnoid issues.  Went to pedi and was given a referal to an ENT.  We had the ENT on thursday... here is where were are at.

ENT looks at DS pretty quickly and says he sees a TINY bit of fluid in DS right ear.  Says before he does any tests he wants to see if he can clear the fluid up.  ENT says to come back in 2 weeks and follow up.  at that time if there is some fluid still there he thinks he will do an xray but he isnt sure bc babies dont sit still for xrays.  but if the fluid is gone then we will discuss whats the next step is in 2 weeks. 

I told the ENT that DS has never had an ear infection in his life and that wasnt our concerns.  (not that an ear infection wouldnt concern me...it wasnt why we came bc he never gets them) we explained our concern was with his excessive mouth breathing... drooling and choking spells at night.  he said we'll just do the meds and come back in 2 weeks. 

DH was fine with this but the anxious mother in me was pissssed! i felt like he was blowing me off.  but im going to give DH and the ENT the benefit of the doubt.  i will keep DS on the meds for 2 weeks and go back and see what he says.  if he tells me DS will out grow this w/o looking into any testing im going for a second opinion.  i felt like hell we were there why couldnt he look at his adnoids?  he had a butt load of gadgets sitting next to him. 

DH and i agrued and he said i just want them to cut DS up so i can get some sleep.  WTF! nooooo! he never hears DS choking in the middle of the night i do... and ots freakin scary! I explained to DH that yeah the meds might clear up this current cold but both LOs have a tiny cold right now and DS still chokes and drools and mouth breaths even when he is not sick.  I even told the ENT this.  both guys blew me off! I have no doubt DS might have just started a cold.  but that doesnt change his condition since he was about 6/8 mo old!

i know they want to clear up any infection before they do any testing makes sence the adnoids could be swollen bc of an infection but i just didnt like the laid back attitude! maybe it was me!?

I need to get through these next 2 weeks bc i really anticipate this ENT saying DS will out grow this and i feel like i will have wasted 3 weeks of DS and my life on this guy.  but i dont want to jump the gun on a second opinion.  grrrr!

Did you see a Pediatric ENT?  Our pedi referred us to an a regular ENT for DS's birth defect and he basically blew us off.  Finally saw a Pediatric ENT yesterday and she recommended immediate surgery.  The adult ENT didn't even want to touch him and said he didn't have instruments small enough for babies!  As for your DH, husbands always think we're overreacting but mothers know our babies best and if your gut tells you to get a second opinion, do it!  Good luck, hope you figure out what's wrong.  (could the choking at night be silent reflux maybe?)

hmm i tried to find a pediatric ENT in our area and i had no luck i will look into it more.  this guy was a regualr ENT.  maybe that was his issue.  he said he is super conservative about working on babies.  so your prob right!

DH and i tossed around the silent reflux thing bc ds had AWFUL reflux as a baby baby.  the thing is he sounds very gaspy like he is trying to catch his breath so i dunno if its reflux?

Have you tried video recording these episodes? Another option would be a sleep study, but that could be a whole other can of worms.

Nate's ENT is Dr. Ishman at Hopkins. We liked her. I don't think she is a Pedi ENT, but we were referred to her specifically from our Developmental Pedi. She is also the director of the sleep clinic. She may be worth a visit since your concerns are also happening during the night. ((Hugs))
