Hi ladies,
I deleted my last post as I wasnt sure if it made sense
Anyway- DD (8 months, EBM) is start to eat real food (ie not stage 1 and 2 baby foods) at her new daycare today and I so I was wondering whether I should expect her to cut down on her milk intake? I've not noticed a change in milk intake when she was on the stage 1 and 2 foods but its mainly because she hated baby mush and would only eat about 1oz at each sitting. Now she loves the food we eat and is really excited when she tries new stuff.
What did your child do when they started to eat more?
Thank you!
Re: does increasing solids results in decreased mailk in take?
It should be a very gradual process. Think of 9-12 months as the transition period when they go from getting their primary nutrition from breastmilk to the point of getting their nutrition from food.
For now, her EBM intake shouldn't decrease too much. But I think my DD went from 3 to 2 bottles at daycare somewhere between 9 and 10 months. And by her birthday she was only drinking 1 or 1 1/2 bottles at daycare, so the switch to milk with meals was pretty easy.
Mia's milk intake did drop at around 8 months, as she got well-established o solids. It was not a huge drop -- from about 18-20 oz/day to 16-18 oz/day (plus three nursing sessions) -- but man, those 2-4 oz made a huge difference for me in terms of pumping. I went from struggling day-to-day to keep up with 4 pumping sessions, to being able to drop down to 3 pumping sessions most days.
As MrsAmers describes, she dropped down gradually over the ensuing months, until she was at about 8-10 oz/day (plus 2 nursing sessions) when I weaned off the pump at 11 months.

My pedi said that at 12 mos of age my DS should be at 24oz of whole milk a day. Right now, he drinks anywhere between 28-32oz a day. He said the main source of his nutrition is still formula, even though he is on table food and stage 3 baby food.
