Anyone's LO allergic to blueberries?

DS has had foods with blueberries blended in (purees) but just ate actual berries for the first time this week at daycare (yesterday and today).  His daycare teacher said he loved them, so I'm assuming he ate quite a few.  Tonight while giving him his bath I noticed a rash on the inside creases of his elbows and a few red splotches on his legs.  Does this sound like it could be a reaction to the blueberries (or a food allergy in general)?  He's never had a reaction to any other food before.

  • Sounds more like eczema or dry skin due to the colder, drier air this time of year. For DD, her allergies have presented as hives or a rash on her face and torso or her hands where the food touched. Vomiting and diarrhea can also be food allergy reactions. Elbows and legs sound odd for a food thing IMO, but I'm no dr so take that as you will.

  • I agree with PP that it sounds more like eczema.  DS used to be sensitive to quite a few foods.  He would get diarrhea and a really bad diaper rash.

  • yea, sounds like winter time ezcema, esp since you see it in the creases. J is allergic to diary, eggs, nuts and seeds and he gets hives within seconds if dairy touches his face. Usually blueberries can cause tummy troubles due to the skins, but they are one of the lesser allergenic berries compaired to strawberries/raspberries. Try an aveeno powder bath and some aquaphor on the red spots and see if that helps-it always helps us when J gets a bad ezcema outbreak.

  • Blueberries give DD a diaper rash if she has too many too often.  I try to regulate. It doesn't cause rashes on any other areas of skin though.  It sounds like your son may just have eczema? GL!
