Possible racist comment? You decide.

Um.. how do I say this.. If you make fun of your own race, does that make it ok or funny? I read off of someone's comment on facebook on how an asian person was calling a group of other asians 'chinamen' and it seriously offended me for some reason. I am asian, and I laugh off at all sorts of things said at me or at asians, but this irked me. Now that I think about it, I think I'm looking too much into it. Is it ever to make fun of your own race? Do you find it offensive when your own race does it? WDYT?

I wouldn't be offended by it. I think it jist depends on who and how it is being said.

hmmmm this is a never ending argument I think! It is like if my friend called me a name being funny and a total stranger did it. I would be offended by the stranger and not by my friend. However sometimes a friend can take things to far and offend me. I guess the same would go with races making fun of their own races. Sometimes they can take it to far.

I think that in general we are far too concerned with not offending people and being politically correct. Is it cool to make fun of a race? IMO, no. But I do respect the right of others to say whatever they want, and if it offends me then so be it. So even if it is racist, that's this person's right. Go ahead and bring on the flames. I'll only be on here for a short while since I'm on my break. This is just a topic I feel strongly about.

That would bug me. I have a few friends who make fun of their own respective races and it makes me feel awkward.

I think you are looking too much into it. Besides, they didn't say it to you and how do you know its not some kind of joke between these people or something. That kind of stuff doesn't bother me (although I don't joke that way) but I do think if people can dish it out they also need to be able to take it.
