Re: coffee drinkers?
I drink coffee daily - as long as you are under 200mg of caffeine, you are within recommendations. More than that has been shown to be linked with increased risk of m/c in early pregnancy and low birth weight later on.
My DS was very sensitive to caffeine and I didn't drink any in the first several months I was nursing him - but I had also given it up during pregnancy so I've always wondered if there was a link to his sensitvity. I hope DD isn't as sensitive - I need my morning coffee since DS doesn't believe in sleep and I know DD will go along with that plan for awhile too!
DD - February 2011
This, I drink 2 to 3 cups a day and at 30 weeks Abby is apparently boarder-line big at 3lbs. 11oz. so says my high-risk OB so I don't think the caffeine is effecting her weight at this point.
Until about 18 weeks I couldn't really drink coffee b/c I had m/s so bad. After that I started again - just a cup a day of half decaf. Some days if I'm really tired (like today) I drink regular coffee. I think a cup a day is fine - just don't overdo it. I've heard that if you drink coffee while pg your baby will tolerate it better once they're born & you're b/f - not sure if this is true or not.. I'm going to still try to drink my cup of half decaf while b/f & see how it goes.. hopefully it's ok.
I have had coffee regularly all throughout my pregnancy. I love the taste - it has nothing to do with waking me up. i was fine switching to decaf b/c that means I get to drink more of it. The standard recommendation from March of Dimes is up to 300 mg a day - which is actually quite a lot. So when I drink decaf, I get to have a large cup from Starbucks, or I can also not worry about having some chocolate or green tea.
While the March of Dimes states that the 300 mg recommendation is to avoid potential birth defects, I have not seen any studies that actually report a possibility of birth defects.
I am an acupuncturist - and as such - coffee is considered an "herb" in Chinese herbal medicine. From my understanding of the physiological effect of caffeine on the body - the main concern with coffee during pregnancy is that it is a uterine stimulant and can cause contractions in high dosages. I would tell my patients whom have had multiple miscarriages not to consume any coffee in the first trimester. However for a healthy, fertile woman - it really would take a very high dosage to cause contractions that would result in miscarriage.
By the third trimester, you are pretty much in the clear. Baby is fully developed and just getting "better" at everything he/she can already do, so you don't have to worry as much about potential birth defects (if there actually are any with coffee), and the pregnancy is firmly rooted - so you don't have to worry about contractions.
Coffee is also an excellent expectorant -- in fact, my primary care physician recommended i consume more back during my 2nd tri when I got a very bad lung infection. This last week at 39 weeks and having a horrible sinus cold -- I have been getting venti sized FULL caffeine at Starbucks -- both to clear out my lungs and sinuses and to help get things moving if they are ready.
