3rd Trimester

Group B Step Test at 37 Weeks...

I'm curious to see when other people had their Group B tests...I had my OB appointment today and, as it has been for the last (almost) 35 weeks, everything checked out perfectly. Because my "turn" date isn't until Friday - he wanted to wait until my next appointment to do the GBS testing and since my pregnancy has been pretty "boring" (his words since everything has been exactly as it should be) he doesn't think I need to come in again until 37 weeks.

It seems a little late to me to get my test and my first internal at 37 weeks...anyone else shared a similar experience?

Re: Group B Step Test at 37 Weeks...

  • My doctor will do this for me as well.  I'm not that far along, but unless I suddenly become high-risk, I will wait until 37 weeks for both.

  • It does seem late, but I had PTL and the test results hadn't come in yet so they just gave me the antibiotics by IV anyways, no big deal.

  • I was totally shocked when my OB tested for it in my urine at 8 weeks!?  I tested positive so precautions will be taken, but I don't think it's normal for her to have checked it that early.

I think normal is 35-37 weeks for GBS?

  • I had my GBS test at 36 weeks. He opted not to do an internal until 37 weeks.
  • I just had my first internal and GBS at 36 weeks, so I don't think its a big deal for one more week.

With my first pregnancy, five odd years ago, they checked me for it at EVERY appointment. So, once a month in the beginning. And, then, they would put me on anti-biotics for it. And then when they checked again and it wasn't gone, they would put me on it again. I spent my entire pregnancy on anti-biotics, for something that wasn't going to go away. And wasn't hurting me. DUMB.

They changed policies, and only test later in pregnancy now, and then give the anti-biotics during labor only. I was so glad.

  • My OB does the GBS test and first internal exam at 36 weeks, unless you are high risk. GBS can come and go throughout pregnancy so it's important to be tested closer to delivery. I started having preterm labor at 28 weeks so I was tested then and it came out positive. Last week I was tested again and it came back negative.

This is what will happen for me at my next appt at 36 weeks.

  • My doctor warned me that she's doing it tomorrow at my appt.  So, almost 32 weeks.  I don't know what the norm is.  But 37 weeks seems to be the norm around here for internals - I wouldn't expect them at all until 37 weeks at the earliest.

  • My doctor did the strep test at 36 weeks (she said 36-38 weeks is the norm in their office for the GBS test.) No internals until week 39 unless I start I have contractions or other signs of labor.

  • My next appt will include the GBS test.  I will be 35 weeks 3 days at that appointment.  He is considering it my 36 week appt though..

  • I go to the MW on my even weeks, so next Tuesday, I have my 32 week appointment. My MW is planning on doing my GBS test at my 36 week appt. It's only one week. The only concern is if you go into labor before they get the results. I think you're fine though.
  • I'm asking that they do the GB test as early as possible.  I had it done at 36 weeks with DD, but at that same appointment DD flunked a BPP and I ended up in L&D and eventually had to be induced.  They didn't have the GB results back so they just started me on an IV.  Having that IV in my hand and the burning from the antibiotic was horrible...especially since it turned out I tested negative.

Pretty much this.  My GBS test is scheduled for my 36 wk appt and no internals until I start having real contractions.

  • My OB doesn't do GBS screening until 37wks and first internal until 38wks. it si a preference of individual OB's and the hospital's policys too.
