co-worker called my pregnancy a disability

HAHA!  I just had to laugh.  He's a friend of mine who is married and both he and his wife have decided to never have children.  They think they're a financial burden and not for them.  Totally fine by me...but yesterday he said my pregnancy was a disability.  I said that was fine and when I'm HUGE I'm going to come rub my stomach on the back of his shoulder while he's sitting at his desk!

My insurance certainly see's it as one. My company doesn't offer a standard maternity leave, so we're required to take Short Term Disability.

It is.  It's a medical condition that is eligible for benefits, both short and long-term.

Although I am not saying that pregnancy is a disability in any way, pregnancy is often referred to a disability in terms of insurance and in terms of maternal medical leave from work (would that be what coworker was referring to?).

Just because something is a natural body process, why doesn't that make it a medical condition.  In fact, pregnancy makes nearly every normal body function become abnormal.  And you certainly aren't born pregnant.  

However, you can be born blind.  Which, I presume makes it natural, unless you were made blind by some outside force.  So then, does that mean it's not a disability or a medical condition, because, theoretically, that is THEIR natural body process. 

How about leukemia, or cancer?  Breast cancer was my natural body process, but it was a medical condition.  

So, based on what you're saying, pregnancy is a natural process our bodies were made to perform.  So, what are you saying to women who can't get pregnant?  Does that mean their bodies were designed wrong?  Your statements are just dumb.  

If you don't know what you're talking about, it's usually better not to talk.

If pregnancy wasn't a medical condition, I, as well as my oldest son, would be dead right now.  If pregnancy was a natural process for my body, my body was not processing correctly that day.

Pregnancy/childbirth is considered a disability in several arenas.

The state of California even has a Pregnancy Disability Law -https://www.dpa.ca.gov/benefits/health/workcomp/pubs/Disability/page8.shtm

In the US Pregnancy Discrimination Act, is specifically states that you have to treat pregnancy like any other disability. "If an employee is temporarily unable to perform her job because of her pregnancy, the employer must treat her the same as any other temporarily disabled employee. For example, if the employer allows temporarily disabled employees to modify tasks, perform alternative assignments, or take disability leave or leave without pay, the employer also must allow an employee who is temporarily disabled because of pregnancy to do the same."

I'm VERY happy that insurance companies consider pregnancy/childbirth a disability. I get paid leave due to Short-Term Disability. Woohoo!

Technically it is. Pregnant women are protected under the law from job discrimination the same way anyone with any other disability is (ie, can't fire you for getting pregnant - they need to make reasonable accommodations).

I think a better way to put it is, pregnancy is not a disease. I will be the first to admit, I am 8.5 months pregnant and pretty disabled right now.

I couldn't walk for the 2nd half of my pregnancy due to SPD! I'm 4 weeks out from a c-section and function much much much better than when I was 22 weeks pregnant. Pregnancy can certainly disable you.
