Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At my wit's end re: Sippy Cups

Holy S.

DS hates, hates, hates sippies. He has since we started introducing him (I don't know when it was... 7, 8 months?)

He completely refused for a long, long time. I tried cold water - no interest. Warm water- nope. 4 different types of cups/spouts. Cried and screamed at every one.

When he started drinking whole milk at 12 months, I tried it cold in a sippy. No go.

Warm - no.

He really, really needs to stop drinking from bottles. I am so worried that he won't get enough liquid if I go cold turkey and force him to drink from sippies only.

Today so far he has only had 3 oz. of milk because I've only offered it to him in sippies. No bottles so far. It was a BATTLE, and 2 separate attempts, to get that 3 oz in him. He normally chugs 6 oz bottles of milk.

Any tips? What a mess. Thanks!

  • Have you tried a faster flowing sippy spout and maybe dilute some juice in cold water?  That is what got my DS to love his sippy.  We started that way using a straw sippy and he did great from 6months to 15 months.  I got sick of the straw sippy recently though because it leaked all the time.  So I only gave him a hard spout sippy for like 2 days and tried giving him juice in it every once in a while.  Now he drinks milk, water, and juice out of it w/o any problem.  And since it doesn't leak anymore he can walk around the house with it.

It did take a few days of him not drinking much though.

  • Have you tried a straw sippy? Try milk in the fun straw sippy.

I started off with a soft spout sippy for water but when we ditched the bottle she began refusing water. So now water goes in the "fun" straw sippy and milk in the soft spout. She will still go on a drinking strike but not as bad as before.

  • Does he drink out of a standard bottle?  Maybe try these spouts from Nuby.  I use them with DS.

    this!

ds LOVES to drink from a straw!!

we would put straws in our drinks to get him interested and taught him how to use it from our drinks. once he had it down we gave him his own straw sippy

  • Have you tried the Tilty? I know a few people who had this issue and that cup helped when no other cup did, there is less sucking involved so it was less frustrating.

I recommend these as well. DD wouldn't drink from a regular sippy (still won't). Then we tried the Nuby Straw cups and she loved them.

    Yup, he refuses those.

Have also tried other straw ones and he doesn't seem to get it.

OMG. He just ate lunch and as soon as he was done, threw up everything, including the 3 oz of milk I BATTLED to get into him today. I am about to cry :(

  • A couple suggestions:

The take-and-toss sippies worked for us. They have no valve, so they're messier, but it's much easier for my son to drink from those than the traditional sippies. You can wash them, too, and reuse.

But I would just say to relax, honestly. It doesn't sound like he's ready and you have plenty of time. My son still gets a bottle in the morning and one at night that we will probably phase out soon but I'm not going to stress over it. I tried about a million sippy cups with limited success before he started drinking regularly from the disposable ones. It's only been within the past month that he would drink out of the others. It had to click with him.
