Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How much actually solid, chewable food at 12m?

How much of your LO's food was the kind he actually has to chew at 12m? DS will eat puffs, but that's about it.  I keep offerring things like tiny pieces of banana and some stage 3 baby foods, but he either spits it out right away or gags.

I was just wondering what others' experiences have been.  I know, I know, all kids develop at their own pace, yada yada, but chalk this up to him being my first LO.  TIA!

  • She eats pretty much anything and everything. But, she is a good chewer and never chokes.

  • DD has been eating everything we eat since 8 months old.  We started with toast and she has almost no limitations now.

  • He'll eat pretty much anything we put in front of him and is interested more and more in exclusively self-feeding, regardless of the mess.

  • I had the same problem at 12 mths.  The only advice I can really give is keep trying.  It takes a while but they'll get it sooner or later.  His pedi said to offer solids at least 3 times a day.  He is still on the "picky" side but we dep progress since then.  I still fall back on purees if he wont eat.
  • At 12 months, DD was eating 3 meals of solids and 3 8oz bottles of milk. She needed to be majority self feeding to move up to the next room. We did alot of soft foods to start because she only had like 2 teeth at that age.

  • He has 3 meals and one or two snacks a day, he's been on all table food since about 10 months.   He usually eats whatever we're eating but I only did purees for a very short time and started introducing real people food around 7 months.

  • DS only had 4 teeth (2 front on top and bottom) at 12 mo, so he couldn't do a lot of chewing.  He would eat soft fruits (bananas, cut grapes, blueberries, etc.), yogurt, crackers that dissolve/soften quickly (grahams), and would try some of the food we ate.  He did pretty well with noodles (spaghetti, mac & cheese).

  • Thank you so much for the responses!  I'm just going to keep trying and trying different things.  I think it's my fault because I am so scared of him choking on something.
  • DD ate all table food at 12 months. She has not had purees since around 9 months.

  • Norah eats almost all table food and has since about 8 months.  She loves self feeding.  I still give her yogurt with breakfast and the occasional fruit puree as a snack.  We are working on teaching her to use her own spoon so she can feed herself those things.

She gagged a lot in the beginning.  Someone on here suggested printing out an infant heimlich maneuver guide image and putting it on the fridge.  BEST idea ever.  Having it there made me so much more secure and I really learned what gagging is normal and what isn't.
