Amount of whole milk for a day?

My DS's pedi. said to make sure we don't give more then 24 oz. of milk a day. I'm sure sometimes he might get more though due to other's watching him. I have them log how much but I'm my mom and mil aren't always so accurate. Were you told a certain amount? Do you think it can cause harm if given more? TIA!

Re: Amount of whole milk for a day?

  • Our pedi said between 16-24 oz per day.  Usually we're right around 20, but sometimes we go over 24 a little.  I don't think it matters much, unless you are giving him like 40 oz every single day.

  • i don't even know how much he drinks everyday. he gets 3 cups a day but if he hands it to me saying "muhr muhr" then he gets a refill.
  • 16-24 oz/day is the AAP rec. Calcium hinders iron absorption so too much milk can lead to anemia and also cause other problems. In general you want a balanced diet and you don't want to drink *too* many of your calories; toddlers only need about 1000 calories a day and 24 oz of whole milk provides a good chunk of that already.

  • I give my son about 12oz of milk a day and maybe 6 oz of juice and the rest of the day is water. My older kids have about same amount but everyone drink massive amounts of water.

  • Our pedi said no less than 12oz a day.  She drinks about 15-17 now but only because she has an 8oz bottle at night.  I'm afraid when we cut the bottle that she won't get enough milk.
  • Well one thing could be too many calories - but Carter is skinny so I don't think the extra calories would affect him!

One problem I've read from too much milk is constipation.  Another is that the milk is filling his belly and there won't be room for calories/nutrients from other foods.

You could always blame it on the pedi and say they told you to  keep track of how much milk he's getting.  Or send the sippy cups with your mom/MIL pre-filled with how much you want him to have?

I wouldn't worry too much though!

  • Ours said around 16-24, but that up to 30 was fine and not to worry unless he isn't eating well otherwise
