When is it safe to switch to a softer mattress?

Baby #2 is on the way and was wondering if I could buy LO #1 a new soft mattress and give lo#2 the more firm one.  Lo#1 will be two in May.

    Ds has been on a firm double size bed since he was 18 months. He was out of his crib at 14 months becuase he could climb it. Then he kept falling out of the toddler bed around 17 months so we decided to make the jump. He loves it. :)

    DS is sleeping on my old twin mattress that I used for maybe 3 yrs. Its a plush mattress. He's been sleeping on it since we switched him back in Oct at 25mos.
