3rd Trimester

Not to freak anyone out....

but, I have heard about hospitals having bed bugs.  In the news there has been more talk about hotels and stores, but in fact nursing homes, hospital and even schools are coming out with the problem. The last thing anyone wants is to come home with their new baby, and then these guys.

I'm a little paranoid about it since I live in the greater NY area where it has been called an epidemic.  But I know they are a problem everywhere.  Anyways, I believe in an ounce of prevention...

So I plan to have a big plastic bag that I can throw my hospital bag and diaper bag into, which I will tie up when I am not using them to make sure nothing can get in. And, as I would have otherwise, I will throw all of the clothes I wore right into laundry....

There are some interesting tips/guidelines on there too.  Sorry for bringing up this yucky subject ladies, I know it;s the last thing anyone wants to think about.

  • Yea, I know, those pictures are a little graphic.    I actually asked the hospital about bed bugs on our tour.  They said that the hospital has had cases and that they take care of it immediately upon discovery.  Unfortunately, this is not always easily detected.  Makes homebirth that much more tempting :)
  • Ugh, BBs are pains in the A$$!! I ended up in a dorm room with them when I was a freshman in college. It was a terrible experience. I threw anything I could into a dryer, because the heat will kill them, and we ended up having to have our room sprayed. (And it killed my poor plant!) I hope none of us have to go through this with LOs, but keep your eyes peeled for a rashy looking bite, it usually appears on the forearms first, and it itches like crazy. We did discover however, that disinfectants dissuaded them, but didn't completely stop them. The scary thing is that they can hibernate for weeks at a time before needing to eat, so you might not have a problem while you're thinking about it, only to discover them later!
  • I would be interested to know about anyone else's experience with them.  It is a sick fascination.... some people watch hoarders, I follow this....   It just seems like they are impossible to get rid of.  I just do what I can to try and minimize my chances of bringing them into my home.
