I'm having my makeup done at the MAC counter this afternoon in preparation for my maternity pictures later. I know that you are expected to purchase something after your makeup is finished but what is the rule on tipping the artist? TIA!
Honestly, it depends. Are you paying her to do the makeup, or just having her do the makeup and plan on purchasing?
If you are paying her for the service of doing your makeup, I would also tip her. (that would lead me to believe she is qualified along the same lines as a hairstylist or a person who does manicures/pedicures)
If there is no charge for the application of makeup, then I would not tip as it is a service the store provides. It's possible they work off of the comission of the products you purchase.
As a former makeup artist, I would buy product. They work on commission and have a sales goal (and certainly don't expect a tip), so you'll help her meet her goal and she'll get the commission. Also it depends on the dep. store, some have a rule not to accept tips.
