Parenting after a Loss

Any BFing moms who run?

I just found out that my college is having a half marathon in April. I have not run a half since September 2009 and I am thinking of trying it out. Any thoughts on if this would be a good idea or am I being too ambitious?

Re: Any BFing moms who run?

  • I run - but not much these days. You can definitely do moderate physical activity while BFing. But I don't really consider half marathons to be moderate. Some mamas would be fine - others would see a big drop in supply. You might have to experiment to see how much you can do.

    Thanks for the input!

  • I have lost 75 pounds since LO was born, 50 of those pounds were thanks to running.  I was never a runner before, so my body wasn't used to it.  The most mileage I've ever done in a single run is 9 miles.  I usually go for more like 5 miles three times per week.  I didn't see any difference whatsoever in my supply during that time, but I also had a pretty significant oversupply and never had supply problems.

I think its going to be different for everyone and you don't know unless you try.  I would just go for it.  Start slow and work your way up.  If you notice it negatively affecting your supply then I'd back off.  If nothing else you should be able to maintain some sort of baseline of physical activity that will be of benefit to you, even if you can't do the half right away.  Do they offer a 5 or 10K during that race?

They have a 5k later in the year that I could try. I'm not set for any time goal, just a return to half marathons. It's especially good because it's so close to our home. I think I will try to train and see how it feels! Thanks- and great job with your weight loss and the running!

  • I run, usually about 16 miles a week.  I'm starting to train for a half marathon soon (unless I get pg before hand).  I would say go for it.
  • When is the race?  I'm thinking of training for a half marathon in May, but I'm nervous about supply issues, too.  If our races were around the same time, maybe we could train "together" and check in with each other?

I'm planning to take it really slow at first to see if my supply is affected, and then I'll keep building up mileage if things are going well, so I'd probably start the training in mid-Feb so I could slowly get myself ready by the first weekend in May.
