Freezing bm ?

I feel like there has got to be an easier way to this. Right now I am pumping into medela bottles then I combine and store in the bags in a deep freezer. Then when I need it I will have to defrost and pour back into a bottle. Is there an easier way? Are there any bottle that I can just use with the storage bags?

Thanks!

Re: Freezing bm ?

  • The Medela storage bags can be used directly on the pump, or so the box says (I haven't tried it yet).

  • I do the same thing as you but I know Medela bags go right on the pump. The Medela bags are more expensive than the lansinoah bags and I don't trust carrying it home in bags because I afraid they would break on the way. It is a pain and so many dishes.

  • That's what I did too.  Pump into a bottle, then transfer into a bag to freeze.  Then thaw and put back into a bottle.  However, I only frooze the extra milk.  Most of the time I used what I pumped within a few days.  The froozen milk was storage for emergencies.  Then every once in a while I would use a froozen bag to keep them from getting too old.

  • That's how I do it too. The bags don't take up as much storage in the freezer, plus then you don't need many bottles. Plus I just take the frozen bags to daycare and they thaw them out when needed and pour it in her drinking bottle. It's not a big deal to me.
  • Now that I'm back at work, I just pump into bottles and leave them there.  I don't freeze anymore since I'm not making any extra....
  • with my first, my DCP suggested I freeze bm in ice cube trays. 1 cube = approx 1 oz. When I had extra milk, I would freeze in the trays then transfer to zip loc freezer bags (qt size for daily amounts) and then into gal size for weekly or so. My DCP could take out what she needed to each feeding or I could thaw overnight in the fridge. It worked out great.

The trays can go into the dishwasher for cleaning/sanitizing.

(When I started making my own food, this is what I did too - purree and freeze in ice cube trays.)

  • I only froze milk when I was traveling, building up my frozen stash or if i had extra milk. Now i pump directly into the bottles and bring them to daycare the next day.
