1st Trimester

is cramping really normal?

Hey ladies,

I just got my BFP yesterday and while I'm really (cautiously) excited, I'm nervous as well.  I'm only 4 weeks and I keep having AF cramps off and on.  I googled it and I know that this is a common pregnancy symptom but it's also a symptom for miscarriage so how am I supposed to know if it's ok or not?

Have any of you had cramps too?

  • 8w1d and still cramping here and there. Most of the ladies on Aug.2011 still have cramping as well.

  • I have cramps also.  I had cramps with my first LO as well.  Totally normal.

  • Yes, it is totally normal because of hormones and how your uterus is stretching and growing. I am almost 11 weeks and still have cramping off and on. I think if you have severe cramping or bleeding then you should check with your doctor but otherwise try not to worry.

  • Yep, totally normal. For the first week or two after my BFP, I was running to the bathroom every hour thinking my period was about to start. It lasts for a little while and mine have been interspersed with tugging and pulling as everything stretches. As long as you aren't bleeding red, you're fine.

  • I have been crampy since before I got my BFP, other than my breasts hurting I would have though my period was coming.  It comes and goes and from everything I hear it's completely normal.  Every so often I get weird "twinges" that is localized and they tend to happen in only 2 spots but the nurse at my obgyn wasn't worried.  Has anyone else had this?
  • Thanks ladies! I really appreciate the feedback.  I can tell already I'm gonna be slightly more neurotic than I already was :)

  • I'm still very early too(haven't had a dating ultrasound yet) and am having some cramps too or just a little hurting because for me its not really cramping it just hurts a little and some of it feels very weird.  This is my 2nd child and i'm so worried also that something will happen.  My first pregnancy we didn't find out til we were 18 weeks along so i never dealt with 1st tri stuff because we didn't know we were pregnant and i'm so excited to be having another baby and i know my 2 year old little girl will be so excited once she finds out too.  We've only told my parents and are telling my in laws this week and they are all excited i just want a happy and healthy 9 months.
  • Yes. But for mine the cramps are not like AF cramps. AF cramps were more severe and the ones I get now are just slight cramps.

  • Well, I just got a BFP last night...after having an HCG blood draw last Friday with level of 12...so I'm pretty early on, and I've had cramping since yesterday. Very much identical to AF cramps and mostly around my lower back, but not as "sharp" if that makes any sense.

I think it's totally normal !!! But I feel anxious about it, too. Haha. I think that's how it will always be, though, with every new/odd symptom...
