Cloth Diapering

If anyone might find it helpful, a (brief) review of the CDs I tried while figuring things out :)

Because I'm organizing my spreadsheets.  (yes, I have spreadsheets.  Hence the notes on color while I was keeping them straight.  The diapers here cost me a total of $100ish because some were freebies/loans and most were 2nd hand... :)

We knew we wanted OS (because budget is our main reason for CDing) and we knew we wanted pockets (so that daycare/grandpa/whomever could use them--and because I was busy trying to convince the Mr. they weren't scary/difficult).

And I thought I wanted snaps.  For the record, I hate snaps and I'm aplix all the way :-P

And I can't answer what works well at night because that would require my kid to sleep more than 3 hours at a time.  And that isn't happening.

OS pocket Chelory, blue w/ puppies on the inside (WAHM on Hyenacart) -To be fair, this *may* have been a second.

The fit was the best of the OS for early on.  It leaked a bit until she filled out but then that magically got better...but the inside lining was fleece instead of whatever is inside all the rest of the pockets so a tiny bit of that would stick out and wick.  It may have gotten better as she filled out but it irritated the Mr. enough that he tossed the entire thing when I wasn't home one day.  (grrr).  I think it may have been salvageable, the Mr. thought it was the devil incarnate.

OS pocket Sweet doll baby (pink)-Didn't like, had trouble making fit well. waist gaps.

OS pocket  babyland (pink)-Didn't like, had trouble making fit well. leg gaps.  (this was 2nd hand so the elastic may have been bad before I got it)

OS pocket  WHAMmie (green)-Early on, this was one of the better fitting OS when she was small and it worked really well...but the hooks were giveing us fits.  It was just to difficult.  I'd try 'em again in non-hook form.

OS pocket  Kawaii (yellow)-these were our winner.  They didn't fit well when she was tiny but fit well now. The PUL stuff on the outside feels thicker than it does on some of the cheapies we used.

We *do* have some problems w/ how the aplix was sewn on in front--I had to do a quick hand-sew repair job because it was fraying.  And the laundry tabs are crap.  I'm fairly sure the aplix will need to be replaced sooner rather than later because o diaper chain and all that.  But...all told, they get an 8 out of 10 from us, which is enough that it's our stash.

OS pocket  Rocky mt (pink w/ green)-I really WANTED to like this....but it fits badly on Buffy.  Either the leg gussets are to tight or they leak, no middle ground.

And all the rest of the OS diapers have a 'fold' where you adjust them down; this, because of the leg gussets, just had more 'ruffle' to it--which makes it hard for me to get an insert (it didn't come w/ any, I've used both hemp and microfiber) to lay flat so it bunches which results in leaks.  Do not like.

Not OS pockets:

 Prefolds--Little Lions, infant size (seconds)

If I had to do it again, I'd have a size smaller, they're to big for her.  But they work great and the Mr. says they're worth twice the price as burp rags :)

Blue Penguin AIO (small)-I don't think this company exists any more but I really liked this one for a fitted AIO.  I'd consider buying more in sizes that fit now.  She outgrew the small awfully fast :)

Bumpkins, AIO Med-She's just now fitting into this but it's OK.  Nothing great, I don't like the 'windbreaker' feel to the outside.  But it's cute and it doesn't seem to leak and you can stuff it (and would need to if it was worn for to long).

For the below, I have to say, I like the little-lions as far as  quality, but I don't have the prefold/cover love, so take w/ a grain of salt.

Size 0 Kissaluvs contours (used w/ small covers, ProRap) -Or, as the Mr. called them, 'the sheepy diapers'.  Did not like.   Hard to get on, counter-intutive front and back even. always ended up w/ a stray tiny bit sticking out so they'd wick.  ANd I swear I'd set her down and 5 minutes later, the entire thing would be soaked.  So I was changing her constantly.  Wouldn't buy again.

Imse Vimse Organic cover (night-med)-nice and soft outside.  I'm terrified it's going to leak though because the double-gussets on the leg seem to trap the prefold in  that gap more than they prevent it from sliding out.  But I like how they velcro shut, they wash up nicely, and they're incredibly soft and such.

Kushies cover- feels cheap, doesn't like to fit well and I think it'd feel icky on her skin. It was a freebie but I"m just 'meh' about it so it never gets used

Wonderwrap-OS (orange)-this feels like 'wetsuit' type material.  If I did covers, this is probably what I'd do.  It looks big on her but, under clothes, it's less bulky than the Imse Vimse, IMO.  And it fists so that it's easy to make sure that nothing sticks out and wicks away.  It looks a touch goofy but works well--I think this is the only cover that we've never had leak.

And now I'lm going to go start more laundry :)

microfiber inserts

hemp inserts

  • Thanks for posting this.  I'm leaning towards Kawaiis, but the price seems too good to be true!
  • Thanks for this post :)  I wish more people would give little reviews of different things they've used.  Of course, everybody is different, but it's nice to hear opinions!!
