ER & after--give it to me straight!

My ER is likely going to be on Tuesday.  How bad am I going to feel?

My concern is that we live 150 miles away from our clinic and DH needs to get home that afternoon/evening.  I'm afraid that I'm going to be really uncomfortable. . .

Re: ER & after--give it to me straight!

  • I was just really bloated, starting a few hours after I triggered. Plus, I was a bit out of it from the meds. I didn't "hurt" I was just uncomfortable.  I could have been in the car for 150 miles, but I would have whined all the way.

  • Good to know!  I expect to feel discomfort, I just want to make certain that I'm not totally insane for thinking about going home. . . we could take two cars and I could stay longer, but man, I just wanna go home.  I've been away from home since Thursday and I miss my DH and my dog.

  • The only thing I felt after was tired. I was fine to each some lunch, but then I went to lie down and slept most the day/ night - getting up only for an hour or so.

The next day I thought I was fine, but think I did too much because I started to get crampy later on. I was fine when I was lying down though.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • definitely just recline and nap and let your husband do all the driving! I was also really hungry after since I couldn't eat anything before.

  • I was uncomfortable after my ER.  I think I was actually in more pain the day after the ER.  I would bring a pillow and blanket so you be as comfortable as possible in the passenger seat and  try to rest during the drive home.  As the pp mentioned, I was starving as well.
  • i just got back from my ER about an hour ago.  I honestly feel pretty darn good.  I have some slight cramping feelings coming from the ovary area.  I am slightly sleepy, which i believe is just the lingering effects of the anesthesia wearing off.    I just ate a pretty big lunch from Panera Bread too, and feel fine.     I only had a 45 mile commute but tolerated it fine.
    HTH.  Good luck!
  • My experience was obviously different from everyone elses. Mine was just yesterday and it was not just "uncomfortable". I was in a lot of pain yesterday afternoon. I thought I had a high pain tolerance, I have had 4 back surgeries, but the cramping I felt yesterday was worse then any of my back surgeries. Now today is a different story. I feel great today & I am not as bloated as I was yesterday.

I don't want to scare you, but everyone's perception of the same procedure is gonna be different. Some people have no problem & some people are in agonizing pain.
  • Good luck at your ER on Tuesday! I know everyone is different, but I honestly didn't feel too bad. Especially right after the procedure, because I was still groggy and tired from the meds. I think you will be fine as long as you can make yourself comfortable on the ride home. Just bring a blanket & pillow like the pp suggested. Do you have a car adapter that you could use to plug in a heating pad just in case? We have one, and it would work great for that. Hope this helps, and let us know how your ER goes. Crossing my fingers that you get lots of mature eggs on Tuesday!

  • I slept in the car on the way home (about 40 minutes) and took a really long nap as soon as we walked in the door.  Bring a blankie and a pillow and just sleep on the drive (even better if the car has seat warmers).  You should be fine!

  • I would leave right away after your surgery.  I didn't start feeling sore until later that night.  I was really sore both day of ER and the next too.  I didn't plan on that for #1 and I had to work.  For #2 I knew to schedule myself out for that day after too.  Best of luck to you!
  • Right after the ER I felt nauseous for a few hours.  Then the following day I was in a lot of pain.  It felt like I had surgery that cut through my abdominal muscles.  It also felt like I did 4,000 sit ups.  That pain lasted for 2 days and started getting better the day of ET.  After ET, I felt *much* better.  The doc said it's because my follicles were all filled with fluid and my ovaries were huge, which is normal.  They also did a lot of poking and prodding around because I had 31 eggs retrieved.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
