formula "rules"??

We have recently switched to formula full-time (former EP'er) and don't know all the "rules" for formula.  I know exactly what you can do with breastmilk (how long it can be left out, how long it's good for, you can re-heat once, etc).

So, the can says formula lasts for 24 hours in the fridge and can be left out for 2 hours.  Are these pretty accurate?  Can you chill what's left in a bottle and re-heat?  I feel like we're wasting so much more formula than we did the breast milk.

Thanks!!!

  • That's accurate, but once DC starts drinking from the bottle, that has to be used w/in 1 hour.
We only give DD a bottle a day and I feel like I waste soooo much formula! :(

  • I just make the powdered formula as I need it and don't waste any.  Although, since you are coming from EBF, it may take a little while to figure out exactly how much DC takes per feeding.  It helps when you know how many oz to fix per feeding and then you dont waste any.

  • When we started DD on formula, we made a minimum amout (i.e. 3oz.)  if she wanted more, then we would giver her an other ounce or so.

I guess I was a bad mommy, because if there was an ounce left in the bottle, I would put it in a clean bottle, seal it and mix it with fresh formula for the next feeding.  I never had tummy issues with DD while doing that and it saved me a lot of formula in the long run. I don't need to worry so much about it now, because I know how much she will take in.
  • We made the switch to all formula around 7 months.  I made 4 ounces at first, and then made more if necessary.  Now my son consistently has 4 7-ounce bottles a day.  We don't waste any.  Like the PP, I was told once they drink from the bottle, any remaining needed to be used in 1 hour.  Like you said, prepared bottles are good for 2 hours room temp, and 24 hours in the fridge.  However, I am sure you can extend these times without any harm.
