Baby Names

Do you like the name Abigail?

Popularity isn't an issue for us. All the names we picked were in the top 50. Our son's name is Evan.

We've narrowed it down to Abigail and Madeline. If we were to name her Abigail, I'd definitely call her Abby- I love the NM more than the actual name. The opposite goes for Madeline. I like Madeline but not crazy about Maddy (although I could tolerate it).

Other people have told me just to go with Abby as a full name if that's what we like, but shouldn't I give her the option of Abigail in case she doesn't want Abby when she gets older?

Do you think the name Abigail is a pretty, feminine name that will grow with her?

If you had to choose, would it be Abigail or Madeline (pronounced -lynn)?

Thanks!

    I like Abigail.

I like Abby ... but ONLY as a nn. Go with Abigail.

I do not like Madeline at all.

     Ditto!

  • I love the name Abigail, especially with the nickname Abby.  Madeline is also very nice but I wouldn't use it if you don't like Maddy.

  • There's nothing wrong with Abigail or Abby, it's just a name I can't stand. I don't know why, I just don't find it attractive at all. That said, it is a strong classic name that has withstood the tests of time. Don't name her just Abby. I think it's outright silly to give a child a nickname as an official name.

Madeline is more my taste, but spelled this way, I'd pronounce it Mad-eh-LINE. Which I vastly prefer, but Madelyn is lovely too. If you go this route, I'd strongly reconsider the spelling because it could definitely cause lots of headaches and annoyance for you and her in the future.

  • I love the name Abigail and the nn Abby. We couldn't handle the popularity and our family lost a young cousin named Abbi, so it's out for us.

  • I think it's beautiful. I prefer Abigail over Madeline.

  • I like Abigail, along with the nn Abby.  I LOVE Madeline (but pronounced -LINE).  I agree with others that the spelling will cause headaches in the future.
  • It was a top contender for us! I love Abigail.
  • Abigail is a beautiful name!
  • No, I don't. I like the nickname Abby though, but I wouldn't use it as a formal name. Now, the name Madeline is just adorable. I would think people would pronounce it with a "line" though, instead of "lynn" with that spelling.

  • Yes, I love Abigail and think it is pretty, feminine and will age well. I also think it goes great with big brother, Evan! Evan and Abigail is a great sibset!

I like Madeline but personally would stay far away from it because of the different ending pronunciations. I only like the -line ending. I don't care for the -lynn ending. I wouldn't want the confusion.

This. I LOVE the name Abigail, with Abby as the nn. My sister's name is Abigail (mn Sarah). Her family and friends (and most coworkers) call her Abby, but she uses her full name for grad school applications, resume, etc. Great choice!

Madeline is NMS and I want to pronounce the ending line not lynn when I see it.

  • I love love love abigail, but H vetoed it. Its one of my favorites. But, I love classic names.
  • This will probably be our girl's name! DH loves it (I'm wanting Anna but he's not budging, lol.) Anyways, I love the NN Abby and it's a beautiful, classic name. I was wanting a name that would go well with Audrey and they sound great together :)
  • I am definitely a supporter of giving her the real name (Abigail) and just calling her Abby. My name is Anne, but my parents always called me Annie. I am so glad that as an adult I can have a non nickname for official occasions.
  • thanks again for the comments and suggestions.
