Help.....NBR about my dogs

So I'm having problems with my dogs. I have 3 of them. Lately there have been a lot of "accidents" going on! Due to having 3 dogs I have no idea which dog is doing it. When this first started happening I decided that the dogs wont get to stay in the house when no ones home. Problem solved or so I thought. NOW they are having accidents when DH and I are home, like at night! They have NEVER had a problem waking us up and letting us know that they need to go outside. I dont know what to do.

And to make it all even worse, I have lamanate(sp) hardwood floors and have started to notice "bubbles" where the dogs have been going at!!!! Is there a way to fix it or do I need to rip out the flooring and replace it??

Is it because it's colder out than normal here? Or is it because they can sense the baby? Please someone be able to help, I love my dogs and dont know what to do!

  • What do you mean by "the dogs don't get to stay in the house" when you're not home?  Are they outside?  Not sure where you're located, but dogs are pack animals, and consider themselves a part of the family...I'm sure being shunned outside (even assuming the weather elements are ideal!) seems unfair to a dog that won't understand.

How long are they home alone?  Maybe you could hire a dogwalker?

Also, I'd suggest taking them to the vet.  It could be as simple as a UTI or some other infection, that is making one of the dogs incontinent.  I had a dog with weak bladder issues, but a daily dose of Proin and she hasn't had an accident in almost a year.

  • Sounds to me like one (or more) of them has a UTI.  The only time Lulu has had an accident indoors (after being potty trained) was when she had a UTI.

    Yes  Ditto all this.

Also don't let your dogs out of your sight when you are home so you can watch for signs that they have to go out. Crate them when you are not home and take them to the vet to test for a UTI.

KelXOXO- my dog is on Proin too!

  • If it's a problem "out of the blue," then definitely get them checked out at the vet. Also, I second crating them when you're not at home and keeping them confined to the same room as you when they are home. If it's a behavioural issue, you'll have to go back to basics: Take them out on leashes every hour until the potty, and then praise like crazy.

  • My thoughts in putting them outside when no one is home was that they would get to be together. ( Pack animals) If I put them in crates then they would be seperated.  ( It made sense in my head)

They are home for 8 hours MAX

Do you think it would be bad if I only crated them one at a time to find out who is doing it? Or should I crate all of them until I can get them into the vet?

  • Also thank you all for responding. Please dont think that I'm so horrible dog owner, it has just been frustrating to deal with and I think that I let my temper get the best of me with dealing with this instead of thinking rationally!

I'm not sure if I think that it is a medical issue,it's ALWAYS in the same area. I really think that it is either because they are upset that DH isn't home as much as he used to be or that it was truely an accident once and now that they can smell it, they continue to do it. Maybe even mark over each other.

Thanks again for all the help and ideas and what to do

You aren't terrible, I can see how you thought that was logical but too many bad things can happen to dogs left unattended outside. My dogs will be crated for life because they can not be trusted out of their crates for their own saftey, they are next to each other so they can "talk" to each other. My one dog is incontinent and has to wear diapers so I know how annoying it is dealing with pee all the time.

I would crate them all until you can go to the vet, why clean up more pee than you have to? Clean any spots that may have pee on them with enzymatic cleaner such as natures miracle that way they won't keep peeing in the same place.

  • We had to do the exact same thing. I used to have a room in my house for my dogs, and now that we are expecting the dog room is the babys room and the pups are going outside. We built them a little fenced in area in a section of the backyard, also put toys and a dog house with warm blankies in there. I felt soooo guilty having to put them outside, but they actually seem to like it...except now that its colder not so much)) My boy dog had an accident the other night,(#2) which suprised me a lot, since he hadent had one in so long. I just went back to the basics on training and put him outside to go potty then brought him back in. Other than what others said about maybe a UTI, it could just take them some time to get used to, mine took a little time, but seem to enjoy it now. ;)

I dont have the space in my house to put all the crates next to each other, or even all in the same room for that matter :( All my dogs weigh 65+ lbs). And thanks for the cleaner idea...I will have to go and get that like NOW!

  • We have 3 dogs also (2 labs and a spoiled mini-schnauzer) - they are all crated when we're not home, and they're totally happy in there. Sometimes they even go in just to relax (they each have a bed in the crate and some water.) I strongly recommend crating when you go out. I know it feels like you're caging an animal, but honestly, you're not - you're looking out for their well being as well as protecting your home.

However, it sounds like either a UTI (but I feel like you would have noticed straining, or changes in behavior from the dog with the issue) or, it could even be diabetes. Definitely worth taking a trip to the vet. Good Luck!
