TTC After a Loss

Dear coffee, why do I love you this much?

I am really trying to kick my coffee habit, but I do get bad headaches without it and decaf tastes so bad.  I would like to be coffee free for when we TTC again, but it's so hard!  Has anyone found a good replacement, or are there others out there dealing with this as well? =/

  • I stopped immediately the first time.  I didn't have a single sip of regular coffee for 7 months during the pregnancy and 1 month after.  I just started drinking it again, but it's definitely my life source for the mornings!!!  I'm trying to ween myself back down b/c we are good to start ttc after this next cycle. We'll see...

     You could always stop cold turkey and use Alieve for a headache.  It only takes a week or so for the need for caffeine to be out of your system.

  • I don't drink coffee because it all tastes nasty to me LOL!  What about going half-caf at least for a while?  Or maybe switching to hot tea?  Is it the taste, the ritual, or the pick-me-up that you are having a hard time giving up?

    I didn't realize that, maybe cold turkey is the way to go, of course I will need to remember to buy a bottle of Alieve when I do my grocery shopping.

    I really do like the taste, but I could try switching to hot tea because I like that too.  Thanks!

  • I gave up the caffeine a few months ago, as I had been getting migraines for some time. I've kept off it as it's really helped. (Not counting the caffeine in chocolate, obviously!)

    I know what you mean though about it not being the same. I drink decaf tea at home, and just try to get to Costa (a Starbucks equivalent) as often as possible to at least get a decent decaf latte.  

    Having said that, I really miss the coffee buzz. This afternoon seems to be going very slowly and I can't get my brain into gear. :)

  • Have you ever tried the Starbucks Decaf Via packets?  I feel like those really don't taste like decaf.  I bought them for when I was pg, but now until I am pg again, I just order half-caf at Starbucks so it's not a shock when I go totally decaf.

  • I switched to hot tea for a couple weeks (it has less caffiene) and then I stopped that as well.  I had a lot less headaches.  Good luck!  I need to quit coffee myself again.

  • I kicked my pot-a-day habit cold turkey last year due to a non-TTC health issue. After a week or so of feeling groggy and having headaches I felt fine. It's hard but definitely doable. If you don't like decaf, I agree with maybe trying hot tea as a substitute? You can DOOOEEEETT! Smile

  • I only have one cup in the morning and my doctor says that is fine.  I agree, try half caf or drink tea.  My acupuncturist especially recommends green tea, which is lower in caffeine.

  • I have 1 cup of coffee every single morning. I don't plan on giving it up. I quit cold turkey with each of my pgs and didn't have any problems.

    How about cutting your caffeine intake in half. Maybe a smaller cup in the morning? Or if you choose to keep your large cup of coffee in the am...just eliminate anything else from your diet with caffeine for the remainder of the day.

  • I love coffee too, and I fully support 1 cup a day, even when pg.  I also drink a lot more tea, and got myself a box of "expectant mother" tea from Yogi which strangely makes me feel good to drink, even though I'm not expecting.  It's like my good luck tea :)  It's yummy too.

    This exactly. I lvoe coffee, and it makes me more productive at work. I only drink one cup a day though, 2 at most, so as long as I'm not jittery I think it's fine!! 

    I'd also recommend the half caf, half decaf, or just increase your water intake. That helps!
