Baby Names

Nicknames?

We are team green and set on names for girl and boy. I am a formal name kind of person and like to call people by their formal names. However, I know nicknames are going to happen.

Boy's name is Luca. Our last name is a long Italian last name. What's the likelihood of him being called Luke?

Girl's name is Gabriella. I like Brielle or Ella for a nickname but DH is dead set against Gabby.  We would prefer her be called Gabriella. How likely do you think this is?

So much to consider in a name. TIA.

Re: Nicknames?

  • i think luca and lucas are two totally different names and luke is usually the nickname for lucas. gabriella is really pretty but i initially hear gabby as the nn even though ella would be a great one! you could, if you felt it necessary, just say something if anyone ever shortens the name.

  • I see Luca and Lucas completely separate as well but not all do. I grew up wanting to be Kymberli and always and still deal with being shortened to Kym or Kymmie. Does not bother me as much as it used to but I clearly remember introducing myself as Kymberli or correcting people and still being called Kym.

  • My niece's name is Gabrielle and when she was born, her mother said that she hated the nn Gabby and would only call her by her full name.  Now my niece is a preteen and what does she call herself?  Gabby.

Yeah it's different if kids decide to go by the nn but I am not a huge Gabby fan.

  • I wouldn't be worried about Luke for Luca.

I would be worried about Gabby.  That being said if you repeatedly either call her either by her full name or one of the nm you like (brielle or ella) then she will more than likely be apt to use that nickname when she gets older and correct people if they call her Gabby. My full name is Jennifer but I have always been called Jenna - when people call me Jen of Jenny I don't even respond because it isn't a name I associate with myself.  It's like it doesn't register that a person is even talking to me.

I went to school with a Luca and never heard it shortened to Luke.  I agree that Luke is really a nickname for Lucas.

Also, OP - is your name really spelled Kymberli?  How do feel about that vs the spelling Kimberly?  I'm just curious.

Yes, really spelled Kymberli. I don't mind it...it's different and always noticed when I spell it out to people but often people spell it incorrectly. It can be a PITA but there are always compliments that override those that spell it how they want! My drivers license was spelled incorrectly once and I had to go back and have it fixed...they charged me for the error! LOL

  • I'm going to try to keep it just Gabriella and have her decide once she gets older on a NN, but i wouldn't mind Ella even though its too popular now. Also being a 4 syllable name it isn't different than a Julianna or Isabella being called by the full name without a nickname.
