both my DS and DD spent 3 weeks in the NICU. The hospital just called the other day and said they needed to come in for a hearing test due to antibiotics they were on while in the NICU. Just curious if others went through this, what to expect? they twins will be 9 months old this Saturday..
TIA
Re: what to expect at hearing test?
As far as I know this is a pretty standard requirement to leave the NICU.
here is a pic of my LO during the test. He looked so cute and the test itself didn't bother him a bit. It was very quick and easy.
I hope everything comes back normal!
awww - what a cutie! I'm sure my twins had this done to leave the NICU also, but e weren't there for it :-( not sure why they need it again? I wasn't sure if it was different since they are a bit older now... guess I'll find out! I'll post an update either way :-)

DS had a hearing test at ~10-11 months since he wasn't babbling as much as they wanted. It was relatively easy. It was an awake test, not like the one in the NICU. First the audiologist talked to DS and I in the main room and checked the pressure in his ears with a machine. Then we went into the sound room with her assistant. DS sat in my lap in a big chair in the middle of the room and there was a column of dark boxes each with a toy inside on either aside of the room (directly to our left and right). The assistant held up some toys occasionally to keep DS from getting too mad - can't remember what else he did, probably helped make sure I didn't give inappropriate cues.
First the audiologist had certain sounds playing like thump thump and then one of the toy would start moving and light up. Left and right. They were looking to see when he seemed to notice the noise and look in the correct direction. My guess is the toy made it more appealing for him to do look so then they could get a better sense of his ability to hear since if he heard the thump he'd look for the toy. Then they repeated the whole thing with little earbuds in his ears. She also listened to how he responded to his name and some statements coming out of the left and right speakers with and without the earbuds.
Just make sure they're full and awake and you should be good.
sorry I read this in a huge hurry and I thought you were leaving the NICU. **smacks head**
We also had a routine follow-up hearing test after leaving the NICU. Maybe 6 months later? No worries!!
I wonder why antibiotics would matter. Did they pass their screening that they had prior to going home? My DS passed in one ear and did not pass in the other. He was kind of awake for the test which didn't help it perform properly. We went back in about a month later and they did a few different tests that were similar to the ones from the nicu. They put little electrodes on his head and played little sounds into his ears and registered the brain activity from it. They also somehow measured how much his eardrum was vibrating to determine if the ear canal was clear. I think there was one other test but I don't remember what it was. He also didn't pass this screening in the one ear so we are going back next week to do it all over again!! I really hope he passes this time otherwise we will probably need to see an ENT doctor. Good luck with yours!
