Infertility

Those with unexplained IF, OOP, and moved to IVF...

At what point did you move to IVF?  IF I wasnt OOP I think I would probably be going next cycle.  But seeing as I am OOP... I just dont know if I should keep trying injectables 2 more cycles or move to IVF.    I am not getting any younger...

Re: Those with unexplained IF, OOP, and moved to IVF...

  • We had coverage for one IVF cycle, but we decided to move to IVF after three failed IUI's (last w/injects & acu) and then finding that my DH had morph issues.  I just figured we were wasting our time, though our RE at the time thought she could get us pg w/injects/IUIs, I was tired of our crappy odds.  It really depends on your situation.  I'm 34...  GL!

  • We did four cycles of clomid + TI, and then two cycles of injectables + TI -- then RE said we should move to IVF.  We are totally OOP too.  Best of luck with your decision.

  • We are unexplained IF and OOP (except for meds). A round of IUI will be about $3,000 (becaue of all of the monitoring).  We haven't started any treatments yet because we are still trying to figure things out. But I think we will do one IUI and that's it. The success rates are so low and for me since we are unexplained I can't logically wrap my head around IUI (meaning if I knew what the problem was for sure and IUI was something that would bypass that problem then I would be more likely to keep trying IUIs but without knowing what the prob is to me IUIs kind of feel like shooting in the dark and throwing money down the drain).  Of course IUIs are less invasive and certainly less money than IVF but for me, I just don't think I would do more than 1 (MAYBE 2).

That being said, I think we would probably also only do one round of IVF (and if we had snow babies any subsequent rounds of FET) because I just can not commit to years and years of fertility treatments due to the financial and emotional toll it would take on our family.  Also because my major goal is to have a baby, not to give birth I want to make sure that whatever path we take, there is money left over to afford adoption if that becomes our only option without having to save up for that for years. We are 36 and 37 and I certainly want to be parents before we are 40.

History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012

  • We are completely OOP and I am 37.  We did 3 IUI's then moved onto IVF because of the better chance of success, we did not want to spend any more money on IUI's.  Since IVF #1 failed, we are now debating on going backward and tryinig 1 or 2 IUI's with inj.  If we go straight to IVF #2 and it fails, then that is the end of the road for us.  We are still trying to save enough money for IVF #2 + meds.

  • We moved onto IVF when our doctor suggested that this was the best chance for us.  We did 3 IUI cycles and we are currently doing a cost sharing program with our clinic for IVF.

  • I recommend moving as soon as you can afford it, the success rates with IUI are just not that great.  Good luck!

  • We did 6 IUIs before moving on. We did 4, then I had a lap and then we gave another 2 a whirl. We are completely OOP and unexplained. In hindsight, I would probably have liked to move on to IVF sooner as I can't believe I am STILL not pregnant. However I did have some meds left over from my last IUI so that helped bring down my meds cost for the IUI.
