Will you be hiring a Doula for Labor and Delivery?

I want to but, I cant really seem to find any reliable sources here and from what I did find they are terribly expensive. I want one stand up for me on my vbac when I am in the hospital and prevent every intervention they want to throw my way. I could buy a lot of baby clothes for the price they want to charge.
I am also strongly considering it... I've been emailing around 4 different women the price range is from $350 - $500 in our area... I am planning on doing a un-medicated birth and my midwife said if you can afford one they are wonderful! I think I may say something about it on my registry.

Ask your OB office if they could give you any references. My OB office gave me a resource in our area that offers a "Meet and Greet the Doulas in the area" and they do a sort of speed dating where you can meet all the Doulas and also learn the benifits of hiring one. DH and I are planning on going to the free seminar next week.

We did for our first and loved it... she really helped DH feel like part of the experience... talked him through what was going on (even though he read lots of books) and directed him as to how he could help relieve the pain (pressure points, etc). She was great!

Get a good one that is still in-training or gaining birthing experiences toward her certification... they usually charge less but are still great!

One of my best friends had one for her delivery in September and she loved her. She highly recommended using one. She said she couldn't have gone all natural had she not been there.
With that being said...I'm not because I don't mind using drugs if I need them and don't have any intentions/expectations, one way or another, going into delivery. I'm just going the normal OB route.
I said maybe. I'm taking a self-hypnosis course with a hypno doula, and we'll be using that time with her to decide whether or not we want her to be part of our birth plan.

Yes, we will most likely be hiring one although I haven't started looking yet. I ought to get on that! I didn't find them terribly expensive, or at least not as expensive as I thought. They are around $500-$750 here and I was expecting more like $2000.

Woah! I've been looking and I found a price range of $350 - $500 in our area... I would like to get someone I connect with. The one $500 one is very nice and her email was very well written and just stood out for some reason. I hope we get to meet some at the meet and greet we are having. DH is still on the fence on why we need one. I keep telling him all the great reasons. We are having a hospital birth.

I would if I were planning a hospital birth with an OB. My midwife and her assistant/apprentice will be with me constantly during active labor, so I think a doula would be a bit much. With an OB, they show up at the end, and you might get some attention from an L&D nurse who you've never met. Most of the time, you'll be alone.
