Early wake time...but still tired?

DS has recently weaned completely and 3 of the 4 times he nurses have been replaced with bottles. The 5 a.m. feed we have dropped as I'd like him to not need that. He's adjusted slightly and will wake up at 6 instead but he is still SO tired. The only way he got himself to STTN is by CIO. Should I just let him CIO when he wakes at 6? Anyone go through something similar?

Re: Early wake time...but still tired?

  • What time does he go to bed? I know it sounds backwards, but some kids wake up too early when they go to bed too late. DD is like that... if we put her to bed at 7:30 (her bedtime is 7), she wakes up at 5:30 or 6am instead of 6:30-7am like she usually does. So you could try an earlier bedtime. Also... many times DD will wake up early in the morning and talk or play in her crib for 15-20 min and fall asleep for another hour. We set a wake-up time of 7am so if she wakes up happy and isn't screaming for us to get her, we let her play or talk until that time.

  • We put DS to bed based on his second nap. So he usually is in bed for the night between 7 and 8:30 but without fail no matter when he goes down, he's up screaming at 6 a.m. If I pick him up or give him a bottle he instantly knocks out and I'm trying not to start bad habits just b/c its easier for me. I get up at 5 regardless of DS. I just want him to wake up happy and ready for the day when he wants to.

  • DS had been STTN for a long time and had no nighttime feedings, but he started a 5:30 wakeup that lasted months.  There was no way in hell I was going along with that!  I totally ignored it and he went back to sleep until his regular time.  After a little while, he would maybe cry for 30 seconds and then go back down.  Now he hasn't done it in months!

He stayed with my ILs for a few days...of course they didn't listen to me and let their precious grandson cry at 5:30.  He got them up every morning and was crabby all day.  When he got back to my house, he went right back to sleeping until 7:30!  It's the little things that make you happy :)
