Cloth Diapering

Your experiences with Cloth Diapering??

Ok, so I am thinking about CDing this baby once she arrives, but I don't really know what to do yet. I have heard about some experiences with CD, watched a couple videos on how to use them, and read the pros and cons.I am also thinking about using FuzziBunz "one size".

Have any of you used CD?

How did they work for you?

What kinds did you use?

Basically.. anything you are willing to share about your experiences, or any advice you have with using CD will be greatly appreciated. :)

Re: Your experiences with Cloth Diapering??

  • First, don't get your hopes up on one type of diaper. The one you love might not work for your LO. Most of the ones I bought did fine. I was given some One size pockets that leaked but with a little growing on LO's part and some tweaking, they were fine...until the elastic went out. Anyway, many people on this board will tell you that most OS (one size) diapers don't fit a newborn well, and the umbilical cord stump might be a little tricky.

  • Check the FAQs at the top of the board. They may help.

If we're posting here, we're most likely using CDs. I've been CDing DD for about 10 months now.

They work great. There was a learning curve, but once I figured out the basics I was off and running. And it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be, even with prefolds.

so far I've used prefolds, fitteds (at least 3 different kinds), sized pockets, one-sized pockets, and an AIO that sneaked in there ;)

  • I haven't used FuzziBunz, but I have had a really good experience with CDs so far. Here's a link to the blog posts I have written about CDs.

You're asking this on a CDing board? What do you think we talk about here, compact discs?

They work great. If they didn't work, I'd stop using them. (The Fuzzibunz OS were a challenge, to be honest. They leave marks on my baby, the elastic won't stay in the holes and when they are tight enough to fit, they look horribly bunchy and they leak. Some people like them, but I do not.) Still, I wouldn't buy one diaper for my whole stash until I'd tried a bunch to see what works for me. Like, I never would have bought Kawaiis but I got some for free and I lovelovelove them.

    So far, I've tried:

Prefolds with thirsties and thirsties duo covers (Indian Prefolds get a Yes,  Hemp Babies Weeds get a YesYes, Gerber Prefolds get a No) and thirsties duo covers get a thousand thumbs up

Pockets: BG 4.0s, Knickernappies OS, BabyKicks OS, Kawaii OS, Fuzzibunz OS No, Fuzzibunz Perfect Size, Happy Heinys, and Rumparooz. Of these, my favorite are the Rumparoos, the kawaii, and the BG 4.0s, in that order (though I haven't had the HH for long, and so far I really like them). I also use AFFF inserts instead of the regular RaR or BG inserts (don't like the snaps). The Kawaii inserts are great, though.

AIOs: BG Elementals (love the way they wear as a diaper, hate what a PITA they are to dry), and Kissaluvs Marvel (possibly my favorite of all my diapers, since it cleans like an AIO but dries like a pocket -- also wears great)

I also recently invested in a few fitteds that I haven't tried yet and a soaker.

  • Read through the FAQ at the top of this board.  Like pp's have said, what works for me won't necessarily work for you.  You need to try a bunch of different kinds to find out what fits LO best and works for your family/budget/lifestyle, etc...  My #1 advice to do a Jillian's Drawer trial to test out different brands.

I've been CDing DS since he was alittle over a month - I regret not starting sooner but I was nervous to start since I had no experience and knew no one who had CDed.  In hindsight, I had nothing to be nervous about and could have saved money starting sooner.

I use pockets, AIO's and fitteds.  I use Bum Genius and FuzziBunz perfect size (medium) pockets.  Love them both but prefer FB's.  I didn't like the FB one size.

I use BG AIO's for day care, he only goes twice a week so we only have 6 of them.

For fitteds I have Goodmama, BuBuBeBe, Piddle Poodle, Muttiqan, Doodle Dypes, Bagshot Row Bamboo, and Kiwi Pie (I think that's it but can't remember).  I like all these brands and use fitteds during the day when we are staying home.  DS goes coverless for breathability and I like the natural fibers on his bum.

  • Chill out  -  I apologize that I don't live on this site and apparently asked the wrong question about cloth diapering in a cloth diapering board.... shame on me.

  • Prior to the nest/bump, I though CD was weirdos using white cloths with scary big diaper pins.  WTH would you do this?

I LOVE this!  There is a small learning curve, but DH & I were determined to do it.  It is very easy now (LO is 5wks old) and only takes 2-3 additional loads of laundry each week.

We started with disposables as we're first-time parents.  We used prefolds/Thirsties xs covers starting around wk 3.  LO is now over 10 lbs so we're phasing out the prefolds and using BumGenius 3.0, 4.0 & Elementals.  These are much easier than the prefolds.

Types: I like the pockets (BG 3.0s, 4.0s) but the Elementals are very easy.  worth the extra cost.  We have velcros & snaps.  Velcro is great right now, but we'll appreciate the snaps once LO is older and can take off his diaper.

Washing: Simply dump the bag/contents into the wash.  I do a normal wash on cold/cold without detergent.  I then do Heavy Duty wash on warm/cold + 2nd rinse with detergent.  I throw everything in the dryer.  Very simple.

MIL is supportive.  My parents are coming around but mom still thinks I'm nuts.  Part of me kept up with cd to prove her wrong.  I'm so glad I did!  With each diaper, I love thinking how much I'm saving $$$ in the long-run.  I love that I don't stress out at wasting a diaper when he poops 3x while changing him.

We still have disposables on hand for the church nursery (shower gifts).  I secretly love hearing how my other new-mom friends are spending $$$ on diapers each month.  By our calculations, our break-even point is 7 months (spent more for the elementals) for the first child.  After this, we're 'making' money.
