tell me about the 4 month wakeful period

As DD approaches 4 months I'm getting nervous about the potential of a wakeful period.  DH works til 3am three nights of my work week.  He also cares for DD when I go to work at 7am, so basically we are both on our own when it is time to sleep.  DD normally sleeps from 10pm until 9 or 10am, with a nursing session around 3 and again before I go to work.  What should we expect during this wakeful period?

  • I think it has to do with them becoming more aware and knowing their surroundings more.  So, around 4 months they may be awake at night and want you with them.  I'm not 100% sure, I just remember going through it :)  Around this point I know some friends who started sleep training.  We weren't ready for that so DH and I both spent quite a bit of time in LO's room either feeding her or just rocking her until she went back to sleep.  It was a rough period of time but you couldn't be mad when you looked down at her sweet face.

  • Honestly- I went into it saying there's no such thing in attempt to bypass it!  It kind of worked- LO woke up a few more times during the night but just giving her the paci put her right back out.  It wasn't fun getting up 4-5 times to but it wasn't that bad either,

  • That doesn't sound so bad.  I guess if I'm super tired I can always sneak a power nap at work while I pump.  I have a hard time putting DD to sleep as it is because I love playing with her so much.  Maybe this will mean I will get a little extra quality snuggle time!

  • For us it's been more frequent night wakings to nurse. I try a paci and/or cuddle first but it never works--he wants to nurse of it'll escalate into screaming. He went from waking once at 5 a.m. to only sleeping for 2-3 hours at a time at night. Saturday night he did one stretch of 4 hours and 45 minutes and I thought I'd gone to heaven, LOL. That said, we co-sleep and BF, and some say that those babies wake to nurse more often anyway. I don't know...I just feel that getting up to walk down the hall 4-5 times a night would make for even less sleep. He'll be 5 months in a couple days so it is hopefully coming to an end soon.
