I have no career...help!

I need to find a career, not just a job. I left my previous employer 2 months before my due date because I couldn't handle the stress and my severe lack of interest in my daily work activities...imagine ticking off hours left until the work day is over on a sheet of paper. The money there was awesome...the experience not so awesome. During this down time I'd like to identify a new field to pursue. I'm a nuturing, caring person who wants to take pride in the work that I do at the end of the day. I currently have a Master's degree, but in a field ill suited for my long term interests. I want to work again, but no make the same mistakes like choosing a job over a career. Anyone else go through this and can you offer some advice?

Re: I have no career...help!

  • I feel stuck in a job too - on paper, my job description is great and it seems like a career path, but in reality, I am bored out of my mind! My pay is pretty good, my benefits are excellent. It makes it hard because I've turned down other jobs just because of the $. I completed my MPA this past June, and then the nonprofit field started to feel the financial crunch...I'm just waiting it out before I change. I want abetter career than what I have...after 8 years, I've hot the top of where I am and my particular work is very narrow. I am looking forward to branching into another aspect of the field within the next year. I may need to just swallow a pay cut to get in the door - at least I might look forward to work and feel like I am making a difference in someone's life. Have you tried to use the resources at your undergrad or graduate school? There might be someone at the career services who can help guide you, kind of coach you into finding what you want to do and how to pursue it. The more expensive route - life coaches are popping up all over the place. I have no idea how good they are, but I think this is what they can assist you with.

  • Try your career services office at the school you got either your undergrad or grad degree from. They may be able to offer you some free services. An assessment may be a good thing for you as well. I am a career counselor and work with alumni all the time at my university. If those things don't work out, page me and I can help you some if you would like.
