Night sleep - 9 months old

How many hours total does your 9 months old or so sleep (disregard any wakings, or STTN, just the total)? DS used to sleep around 11 hours - 8pm-7am, which was perfect since we have to leave the house around 7:30am. It never failed - it's like he had this perfect internal clock that woke him up at 7am, regardless of when he went to bed.

Over the last couple of weeks, he started putting in only 10 hours and this is not working out very well for me. This means that he wakes up at 6am or 5:30 am, which is earlier than my wake up time and, of course, interferes with my getting ready process. Is this normal amount of night sleep for him? Is he permanently dropping to 10 hours? Should I then move his bedtime 1 hour later?

Re: Night sleep - 9 months old

  • My son usually sleeps 12 hours, approx 8:00 to 8:00.  He has been doing this since about 6 months old.  However, he does go through periods where it is less.  I think he sleeps more on the nights when he has been at daycare the day prior since he naps less at daycare.  We did slowly transition to a later bedtime.  We used to have bedtime at 7:00, but now it is 8:00.

  • My DS sleeps about 10 hours a night and has been for months now.  However, he is waking up at 2:00am and crying.  This is not like him.  I hope it is just teething.
  • DS sleeps from about 6:30/7 - 6:00/6:30. With way too many wake-ups in between. :-)
  • DS sleeps from about 8:30-6 or 6:30.  This has been his schedule for quite some time now.  If he would sleep until 7 it would be perfect!  I can't keep him up any later though.

  • That's about how long my ds sleeping at that age and pretty much still does. He goes to be around 8:30/9 pm and gets up between 6:30/7 am. I try to get up by 6 or 6:15 am to get a shower at least and my dh watches the kids until we are all ready to get out the door. My dh works night shift so he is getting home from work as I am getting up. Sometimes, I do take a shower at night to help with the morning routine. It helps just in case we do have an early riser or two in the morning.
  • There is a sleep regression at 9 months - maybe it is affecting your son by waking his brain earlier than usual?

DD has gone through phases when she wakes up 1-2 hours earlier than usual.  It usually lasts for 1-2 weeks and then goes back to her old wake-up time.  I've tried changing her bedtime and it had no affect on her wake-up time.  You can try it, but it might not help.  :-(  Oh, and there is the time change coming up, so I wouldn't permantly change his bedtime until we get through that!
