Working Moms

For those of you with no vacation/sick time left...

What do you do when DC is sick?  Do you just take the time off without pay?  That is what I have been doing, but I can't do that too much!  I finally got the pedi to write me a note for the daycare so they stop sending her home when she has diarrhea...she has something wrong with her that isn't contagious!  She has been sick so often I just can't take anymore time and DH just started a new job, so he can't be running out all the time plus he doesn't have all that much time either.
What do you girls do?

  • I'm very lucky and have a job that is flexible. So long as I get my work done they don't mind if I have to stay home for a day or leave early. Can you work from home or add on hours on another day?

  • I don't know, but I am terrified for when this happens... I don't have a very flexible job, I do a radio show from 10a-2p, so I can't really get a call from daycare and just LEAVE on the spot if it's during those times... (after, sure, someone else could do the rest of my work...) My husband's job is a little more flexible, but still... So I guess for now I'm just crossing my fingers that I'll have a really healthy kid who never gets sick! (I know, I'll keep dreaming! :) I guess I'll just have to figure that out when the time comes!

I guess worst-case scenario, I could just bring her to work with me, and I could have a screaming sick baby in the background while I'm talking on the air... Perhaps THEN they would let me leave! ;)
  • How would working at home be an option, if daycare won't take her?
  • I WFH so I think I'll just keep her home with me and hope she sleeps so I can get work done.  DH's job is also relatively flexible so he might be able to stay home too if I have a busy day and he doesn't have meetings at client sites.

  • i'll work from home those days and have either her grandma or grandpa come over to help with her.
  • I work from home or work a half day in the office and go home. My dh works nights, so he can stay up in the morning until I get home at lunch and then I take over so he can sleep.

My work is pretty flexible and understanding.
  • We have a comptime policy at work, so if I need to leave during the week I can just work that weekend, or stay late another day, etc.  I can also work from home but usually if she is sick I'm busy taking care of her so it's not really practical.

  • We're lucky that my parents WFH and live 20 minutes away. It's out of the way for me, but I can drop her off and go to work - I'll most likely be late, but I'll be there. Sometimes, my dad will come to pick her up and take my car, and I take his for the day.

But, I have a lot of sick and vacation time at work, and a pretty flexible work environment that is family-friendly. I try not to take advantage, but I prefer to stay home with DD if I can.
