3rd Trimester

Just drank the 'Midwives Cocktail'

So my dr wants to induce already on Tuesday, which I will only be 1 week overdue and I am not really thrilled about the idea, I have no medical reason for it, just that I will be past my due date, so I am pretty much willing to try anything more natural to kick start this labour.

My doula gave me a recipe that she said is called the Midwives Cocktail, it's castor oil, baking soda and orange juice, I added a little pomegranate juice too for flavour.  It wasn't all that bad, but now I feel disgusting!  I had eaten not long before and since there already isn't much room in there to begin with I probably should have drank it on an empty stomach.  Just hope it doesn't make me throw up and actually helps put me into labour!

Re: Just drank the 'Midwives Cocktail'

  • This was the one thing I was always afraid to try for fear of the terrible cramping and runs! Good luck!
  • GROSS!  That sounds nasty!

I was told (when the time comes) to walk as much as possible and bounce on an exercise ball to help bring baby down and get things moving.

  • Good luck! I would do the same thing if facing an induction. Anything has to be better than Pit! I hope it doesn't make you too sick (it will make SOMETHING happen in your booty...regardless) and that baby decides to head out :)

  • The only reason the baking soda and orange juice are in there is to keep nausea down (baking soda) and to make it more palatable (orange juice).  Neither of those two items do anything to induce labor.  The reason why castor oil works is because it is a very strong laxative and thus creates strong contractions in all the hollow organs of the lower abdomen.  In my opinion, as an herbalist, there are a lot of other herbs and natural option alternatives to castor oil that won't make you ill or give you bowel cramping the way this will.  It's not something I plan to use.

Good luck -- hope you can keep it down and it doesn't cause too much GI distress.  If it's not successful, maybe talk to your MW about things like the cohoshes or other uterine stimulants like caffeine and ginseng, EPO (which you probably are already taking since it takes about a week for that to start softening the cervix) or other herbs that are gentler laxatives (aloe, senna, magnesium) that can still do the trick without making you ill.
