One year old won't sleep without being held

Background: We have always bed-shared with DS, and I've always nursed to sleep at night and for naps. Lately he wants to nurse alll day long (I WAH.) We'll nurse on the couch before nap and he'll fall asleep in my arms, but as soon as I go to put him on a pillow and blanket, he wakes up and cries for me.

Is extreme clinginess and sleep regression common right around a year?

    How can I help him self-soothe? He won't go back to sleep without nursing. It breaks my heart to hear him cry for me and I don't want him to CIO. I'm at a loss. Right now he is in a pack n play with a big teddy bear, pillow, and blanket. He's whining but not full-out crying. :(
