Does the hospital that you're delivering at...

have a birthing tub? I'm delivering at a smaller sized hospital that does have one birthing tub that I can use (as long as it is available at the time I'm in labor) If someone else requests it the same time I'm there, I guess I'm sh!t outta luck. BUT I'm really thinking about using it during labor this time to prolong my epi as long as possible. My dr doesn't allow the actual delivery in the tub (not sure why)...Will you use one if you can??

  • I'm going natural and with my first I had back labor...so I will be happy so long as I can do early labor in the shower...

  • We are going to a birthing center and each of the rooms has a jacuzzi tub.

  • I think my hospital has two for labor.

  • I've only been in a laboring room once (#1 ended in an emergency c/s after hours of labor), and I didn't notice one. I never have seen one in all the walks I took  around the maternity ward following c/s. The hospital is in a city of about 250,000 people, but it's the hub of our county, which is all tiny towns, so it's "big time" to us. There are 2 other big hospitals in the city, so maybe they have them. I'm a germaphobe and I've seen how dirty hospitals are, so I wouldn't touch one if they did.

This is the only thing that's making me think twice about using it....I'm not a germaphobe but I'm still curious how clean the tub actually would be.

  • I'm delivering at a very popular and reputable women's hospital so it surprises me that there is only one tub available.  I'm praying it's available when I go into labor!  They don't allow births in the tub but they do allow you to labor in it.  I will most definitely use it if I can.

  • The hospital I was going to deliver at has zero tubs, and will not allow ANY portable tubs be brought in for any part of labor or delivery. They're very anti-water (heck, anti-natural/intervention free) so that's a main reason why we have looked into other options and may be doing a home birth in a city a little ways away instead.

  • I don't think they do. I know they do have the ball though as long as it is not in use.
  • Or should I say "they" are not in use...I wonder if I could bring my own? Hmmm
  • Mine has 2. Same deal as the OP, you can request them as long as they aren't in use, but they are for labor only -- no water births!

Like a pp mentioned, the germ factor freaks me the f out, so I doubt I will use it (I didn't even ask about it the 2 previous times),

  • Our hospital has one (some?), I'd like to use it as long as possible!

  • I don't think mine does. They do have showers you can use and birthing balls. Hopefully I go into labor naturally this time and can take advantage of those.

  • I'm still not sure which hospital I'll be having the baby at yet. There is a chance I can't have the baby at the local hospital and there is a strong chance that we'll be moving before my due date anyway, so we'll see.

I don't think I would try the birth tub though.

  • no idea about a bath, but I know the labor and delivery suites have private baths so at least a shower would be available.

  • Each room has a huge soaking tub, and then there is one waterbirth room.  They said so far they have not run into an issue with 2 people wanting to use it at the same time.  They said they can turn the room over quickly.  You basically go in that room when you are ready to push.
