3rd Trimester

What's the best/new/whatever babywearing item, currently?

I haven't been keeping up with the tri-boards and DD didn't take to being worn.  She was never really comfortable for more than five minutes tops, so it was never worth it for me to even bother much with them.

We have the typical baby bjorn (borrowed from family) that she hated, and I bought my own peanut shell sling and a moby.  The sling was just "meh" for both of us.  She was ok in it once she had good head control - I didn't put her in it past one time when she was a newborn because she looked too cramped.  The moby - I hated.  It was too much of a PITA to put on (took forever) and then once I got her in, like I said above, she was good for about five minutes before she wanted out - not worth the effort for me.  Not to mention, no matter how I tied it, or how tight I got it - I just personally never felt like she was secure in it.  I feel like that's all that was talked about when I was on the tri-boards and the newborn board last time: the amazing moby moby moby.  Bleh.

So, since I am willing to try again with baby #2 - what should I look for this time?

I'm looking for something that is quick and easy to put on and will keep LO secure - or at least feeling more secure to me than the moby did.  How about a ring sling?

Re: What's the best/new/whatever babywearing item, currently?

  • I would try the attachment parenting board, they are all about wearing.

I tried a sling, front chico carrier, infantino sling (yes I know recalled, I sent it back) and didn't love them.

I however really wanted one for baby two since I'll need more free hands for ds.

I asked for a moby. sorry to hear you didn't like yours, I thought I'd give it a shot.

I think it depends on your kiddo and what they like.

Hopefully they can point you in the right direction over there!!!

  • I have absolutely zero experience but a girlfriend of mine swears by her Beco Baby carrier.  I'll probably get one of those if I get one!

  • Honestly I have no idea how your baby wouldn't feel secure in a Moby, to me it felt as secure if not more than if I were holding DS with my own arms, everyone's different I guess:). Have you looked at a Mei Tai wrap? You can wear them on your back or front and they look super easy to put on (I will admit that the Moby is kind of a PITA to put on).

  • For newborns I think stretchy wraps are awesome. They keep LO nice and close and comfy. If you didn't like to tie the Moby you could alwasy try a My Baby Nest or a Baby K'Tan. They do they same wraps as the Moby but you don't have to tie them. Another structured carrier that buckles besides the Beco, as the PP mentioned, is the Ergo. You can use it on the front or the back and it is really quick and easy to put on. It is much more comfy than the Bjorn. Ring slings are also great. I have a Maya Wrap that I use for quick trips in and out of the grocery store or Target. I never used mine for a cradle hold but liked doing hip carries when DD was a little older.

  • I have a moby that I'll use around the house.  You're right that it's a pain to put on but it got easier the more I used it and ds always felt secure.  I'm getting a Beco carrier to use when we're out running errands and such...just not sure if the Butterfly or Gemini yet.

  • I had a bunch of carriers... I'm anti Baby Bjorn because they KILL your neck and shoulders (though DH had no problem carrying DD in it, and I noticed the newest iteration has hip support), pro Moby for security and long term wearing comfort (but yes PITA to put on - not quick), my good friend loved her Mei Tei, and my number one favorite was my KangarooKorner.com adjustable fixed sling but they are out of business now : ( The thing about slings is that they have to be tight to your body - the style that just hangs there is not secure or comfortable for you or baby. Even though it seems like the baby is crammed in, they usually like it because they feel really secure. I've used my sling from birth to 18 mos with my daughter, and if I wasn't quite so pregnant, I'd still be using it. Easiest on/off you can get and if the fit is right, most secure hands free option for baby.
  • I have two woven wraps that I love, but if you thought the Moby was too much hassle, you'll probable feel the same way about wovens.

We are getting an Ergo for quick & easy since it has clips. There is also mei tai's, which are similar but tie on instead. I've heard good things about the Becco Gemini as well.

The ladies on the AP board may have more suggestions or you can google "baby carriers". Good luck.

  • I really like my ERGO and that is what I will use for baby #2

I don't have kids and haven't tried a wrap with an actual baby, but the baby K'tan looks really cool to me. If you go to their website and click the link on the left that says "What is a baby k'tan?", you can watch a video comparing how you put on a K'tan vs. what looks like a Moby to me.

  • Thanks ya'll!  I needed names and ya'll provided - off to check them all out.  :)
  • I got an Ergo for Christmas and although I couldn't try it because the belly was in the way DH loved it and DS tolerated it once he was in there.  He is a toddler who wants to be out so toleration is really all I could ask for.  Without the infant insert you can't use it before 4 months, but I think it will be really useful then.

  • We did the bjorn with dd and she loved it. It wasn't something we could use long term because it killed my back. All of my friends love the ergo so I think we will get one for this time around.
