I have a babyhawk mei tai and baby k'tan to sell, and I am very new to this site (I have never actually used it). How do people generally pay? Would I have to set up a paypal account or could I ask for a check, make sure it clears and then ship the items? tia!

you would need to set up a paypal account.  I've never heard of anyone asking for a check, and to be honest if someone asked me for a check I would say no way. 
With all the fraud that's out there, I wouldn't give someone all that info KWIM? 

And using pp as a seller and a buyer protects both of you with the buyer protection program thing.  Just make sure when you mail something out you send it with delivery confirmation.

This...and there are plenty of places you can use PP at :-)  Atleast, I always find plenty of places!

 I suppose you could ask for a gift card though?

Paypal is definitely the preferred payment method, also, it's customary for the seller to include shipping & handling in the initial price.
