Baby Names

Same first & last initial a no?

My last name starts and ends with an M.  Why is it all the names I like either start with or have an M?  Emma, Madelyn, Madison.  I feel like this is setting my kid up for a tongue twister of a name.  Any similar suggestions?

Re: Same first & last initial a no?

  • You don't necessarily have to avoid alliteration Emma Marx, Madeline Morrow, Emma MacKenzie, and many other combinations will sound fine. What you need to avoid are similar beginning and ending sounds:

Madeline Mathiessen (both begin with same letter and same vowel sound)

Emma Mathiessen (Emma ends with the same vowel sound that Mathiessen begins with)

    HTH.

  • My first name and maiden name are both "C" but the named flowed well.  I have friends with a "M" last name who named their daughter Molly.  Her whole name sounds very nice together.  It just depends on how it flows but I would not completely rule out a first and last name with the same letter.

  • I'd only avoid it if it was PP or AA or something that would get her made fun of. MM is fine.
  • I think it's perfectly fine.  In fact, I kind of like it.  Our last name starts with a D, and my DH's name does as well.  Aside from being called "Double D" as a kid, his name sounds really good IMO.

  • My DS's first name is Ethan and our last name starts with an E too, however it isn't a long "E" sound....its a short "E" sound...if that makes sense.  I know it might sound corny, but growing up my initals were KK and I really liked it, so we did the same for DS, however we won't keep up the E name for the rest of our LOs (however my DH is in love with the name Eli this time).
  • Again, I'm in the camp that it depends on the name. For us, our last name starts w/S and most of the girls "S" names combined w/our LN sounded like a porn star so we avoided it. For boys names, however it sounded good.
Play around a bit. FWIW, we also have a friend who's two boys initals are BBB.

  • I don't think it matters as long as the two names sound good together.

  • It depends on the last name and the flow of the name.

Lucas' name is LL and I didn't actually notice until after we named him. But, the names are SO different and it flows so it doesn't really matter.

  • My husands initials are EE. his name is kind of sing songy but it's not bad.

We're considering an E name if we have a little boy this time

  • i had a similar issue. my last name starts with an r and i liked rylie but i thought it sounded weird. i also love claire but again, the r's blend in too much to me. i guess it depends on what your last name sounds like, how long it is, how many syllables, etc.
