Baby Names

would you use Eleanor with an "L" last name?

Eleanor is and always has been our frontrunner for this baby girl's first name (middle name will be Ann), but I have concerns that it doesn't flow well with our last name, which starts with an "L" and is three syllables.

I seem to be the only one who thinks this, though. I've polled a few close friends and they all think it's fine, as does my husband.

What do you all think?

(We do not plan to give her a nickname.)

  • I made up a last name for the purpose of giving it a try...Eleanor Ann Labamba and Eleanor Labamba. I think it's fine as long as that's the only L in the last name.

  • "Eleanor Lewis" sounds fine to me. As long as the last name doesn't rhyme I think it should be fine.

  • Hey :)  You know that Eleanor is one of our top contenders, too!  It'd be after my gram, who's name is Eleanor Louise LastName.  Even though I'm not crazy about the name Louise, I love the way her first-middle sound because of the "L" repetition.  So, I would think the same would be true for a repeated "L" in the first and last names.
  • I think it will be fine--Eleanor Lancaster, for example, sounds great.

I do think you would run into a problem if you last name was something like Elliston. Eleanor Elliston sounds awful.

  • Yes! Eleanor is beautiful.  I think it would be fine with a non-rhyming L last name.  It's our middle name choice.

  • Unless your last name starts w/"El..." then I don't think it should be a problem.

  • I don't see a problem, and I think Eleanor sounds wonderful with your DS's name.
  • I *am* using Elinor with an "L" last name. It's similar to Elinor Lowell. I think it sounds fine. Also, she is being named for a great grandmother who had the exact same first and last name.

  • I tried it out with my L, last name and it sounds fine. I think Eleanor would be fine with a L last name! And, it's a gorgeous name!

  • Thanks for all the input!  Looks like I'm the only one who thinks this is an issue. :)

I'm admittedly super-sensitive to this particular problem, because my first name and maiden name were a horrible fit (I honestly don't think my mother ever said them out loud together before she chose my name) and I had to live with that for 33 years until I took my husband's last name.

  • It's fine.
