Baby Names

Thoughts? too popular?

So so far i've been very decided on these two names:
Boy:  Elias Eugene- "Eli" for short (Elias was my grandfathers name).
Girl:  Audrey Mary-Kay (Mary and Kay was both of our grandmothers name).

But i began looking at other names and now I love the name for a girl:
Brielle Mary-Kay - "Ella" for short.  It would have to be Ella and not Ellie because my neice is named "Allie" and it would be to confusing.

But is Ella to popular for a girls name?  I don't want something to be super popular...but then i realized that Audrey is a semi-popular name too...so now i'm all over the place.  and then i saw that Eli is semi popular too!

Do you think any of those are to popular?  and do you prefer Brielle "ella" or Audrey?

Re: Thoughts? too popular?

  • I prefer Audrey to Brielle. Neither Audrey or Ella is too popular for me.

  • Yes, those names are popular. Also, I don't know if you are aware but there is now a birth control pill named Ella. I prefer Audrey just because it's not super popular IMO and it's more classic and has more staying power.

  • I had a Briella in my class. She was the most adorable little girl and I loved her name. I prefer Audrey over Brielle. I don't think they're too popular but they're definitely names that will probably be around for awhile.
  • I love the name Audrey.  So, I'd vote for that one.

  • I also prefer Audrey to Brielle/Ella. While Ella is beautiful, you need to consider all the bajillion Emma, Ellie, Ella variations that are so uber popular right now. I think it's pretty close to Allie as well.
  • Thanks Everyone!  After telling my husband about the "brielle", he veto'd it pretty quickly!  and after reading all of your responses i'm 100% back on board with Audrey!  Stick with the gut feeling!

    Thanks again!

  • I like Audrey and Brielle.  However, I'd use Bree for short if I chose Brielle (personally).
  • Going from Audrey to Brielle is a massive 'downgrade' for me. I don't like Brielle at ALL, but Audrey has been a long-time favourite of mine. Yes, it's getting pretty popular, but it's also a lovely name. Brielle sounds so trendy and dated to me. Audrey I guess is trendy in an "old is new" way, but I'd take that over a "syllable smoosh" trend.

Popularity doesn't bother me much. The thing with Ella is that Ellie and Elle are also common nicknames for a TON of other names, so while Ella might not be super popular as a given name (though still common enough) it's going to pop up very often because it's a common nickname and it sounds like a couple other nicknames as well.

I love Audrey and Eli. I think Audrey Mary-Kay is GORGEOUS! Very classy and simple and lovely.

  • I love your boy's name.

I dislike Brielle and I love Audrey and I like the middle name. :)

BTW, if you still like Ella, go with Ella, not Brielle!

  • I don't think that Brielle or Audrey are very popular.  I actually prefer Brielle although I'm not sure about the "Ella" nn.... Ella is very popluar.  Would you consider calling her Bre or maybe Elle?  Either way they are both good choices.

  • I love both Audrey and Brielle.  I don't think I would have a nn with either though!
  • I named mine: Sarah Anne, and Benjamin Lawrence. We have yet to come across other kids with these names their age. Just becuase it sounds common doesn't mean that it is. I chose these names because they will suit my kids no matter what they do in life, lawyers or teachers. :)

I too, know a Briella- and I much prefer it to Brielle (esp. if you're going to use Ella). Ella & Audrey are both pretty popular, but not over the top IMHO. I do like Audrey better than Brielle or Briella.

  • I think that Ella is superpopular as a proper name, but it is rather timeless.  My great-grandmother was Elizabeth, nn Ella.

I love the boys name, btw.

  • One of my good friends has a daughter named Audrey Marie.  They are expecting another baby and if it is a boy he will be named Elias David. I have always thought Audrey and Elias (Eli) "go" well together.  They are trending up in popularity, but nothing I would be too worried about.
  • Love Elias! I'd just call him that. Would use it, but we are dead set on Alice for our next baby and it's too close. I'd use Audrey over Ella in a second, so classy. I always think Audrey Hepburn and with Ella I now just think the BC pill.

  • Ella is popular, but I still like it.  Don't like Brielle, though.

If you like the name Ella, why not just name her that, rather than Brielle? It's fine as a stand-alone name IMO.
