Censoring Huck Finn?

I guess they want to take out the 'n' word and replace it with 'slave' in the original text.

Thoughts?

I think it's stupid. The banning that is.

Re: Censoring Huck Finn?

  • I think censoring any novel is ridiculous. Especially if it's a classic, like Huck Finn. It was written in a different time, I think it's important for anyone who reads it to understand the history and the culture of that time. I always loved English though.. so maybe I'm a little nerdy like that.

But still, I say leave the books as they are!

    My feelings exactly.

I totally agree! I have a feeling more books will be censored too which I think is a total shame.

  • "They" censor all sorts of books, but originals will always be the best sellers.  I love to read books on the banned book list; they are always more exciting than the best seller list.  Maybe that's just the rebel in me! Wink

  • I agree with all of you. The language is part of the value of the book and changing it really takes away from the essence of the novel, and it's place in history.

I saw an interesting debate on our local news yesterday about it. Two scholars (both African American) were debating it. The one who was against it said that if children are not able to comprehend why they shouldn't be using the language now, then they aren't ready to read the book.  He also said that he believes the publishers are changing it because so many schools have banned it, and this is an easy to way to get it back on shelves and make more money. I thought that was spot on.

    Such a shame.
