Embryo Adoption

Just wondering if anyone has considered embryo adoption?

Dh and I were talking and really like this as an option.  We both want our child(ren) to be biologically realated to both of us or not related to either of us; no donor sperm or egg for us. I'm very hesitant about going thorugh IVF and it looks as though an IUI won't be in our future with our MFI.  I want to experience pregnancy if possible and really think this could be a great alternative.  I have been reading up a bit and it seems that there aren't many embryos to adopt out there, but I think it would be worth a try.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • Other than Ked, I don't think there is anyone on this board.

Also, pved.org has some women using donated embryos. It is not an open forum, but the instructions are on the site as to how to get access.

Make sure to do your research. I know there are some bad agencies out there who really take advantage of you. They aren't allowed to charge for the embryos, so they try to make money in other ways, such as requiring a home study. This is not required to receive donated embryos, so if an agency is telling you that you need one, you should look elsewhere. I have also heard some women have luck by calling around to different fertility clinics and getting put on waitlists for donated embryos.

  • Thank you so much for the info.  I intend to do some major research on this subject and I had noticed you can either go through an adoption agency and do a homestudy or go to a clinic and get on a waiting list.  Thanks again.

  • Hi there.

My DH and I just adopted six embryo's and took possession of them at the beginning of December.  I'd be happy to tell you more about our situation (as we didn't go through an agency) if you PM me.

  • We actually highly considered adopting embryos when we were left without anything to tranfer after our last ivf.  Our clinic actually had a few available.  I think there are really great things about doing it.  It's similar to a regular adoption but you get to be pregnant and have a little more control about prenatal care etc.  Also there isn't a birth parent that could change their mind last minute.  I'm not saying there aren't challenges with it as well but I do think it's a great option.   They only reason we didn't do it is because it would have been a last minute decision for us (we only had a few days in which we would have had to do the transfer)  and I was afraid I was letting my emotions help decide.

  • I only know from the other side. Our RE's has asked us what we want to do with any embies left over from our DE cycle. We found out options for where we can donate next week. I am happy to share that with you once we get the info.

  • Sorry to reply late, but we are also considering embryo adoption, for some of the same reasons you indicated. Our chances, even with IVF would be pretty low but I am young and healthy and can carry a pregnancy. We were beginning to look into traditional adoption when we heard about embryo adoption. From what I've found, the most cost-effective way by far is to go thru a fertility clinic, not an agency that requires a home study, etc. There are some websites like Miracles Waiting that offer to help connect people with embryos to donate and those who want embryos. We've decided to start contacting clinics in our area to see what kind of wait times there are.

    Good luck!
