we have a shade that we bought at wal-mart in DS's room. it threw him off when daylight saving time meant he was going to bed while it was still light out. we black out his room at night. we only pull it halfway down during the day for naps so its still a little light but not as bright as normal. it may be throwing him off a bit for the future, but my kid is a crappy sleeper and i'll take every little bit i can get!
We have one. It is to keep the light from the street light on our front lawn out of the room at night, and the sun out during the summer afternoons so it's not 100 degrees in my house. I will probably do what a PP poster said and only close it part way during nap times (unless it's summer...).
I have them in every bedroom in my house, I can't live without them. I get the blackout roller shades custom cut from Home Depot they are like $25 each. I then use sheers and curtains.
We went with heavy drapes, but not fully darkening because we don't want LO to need full darkness to sleep because that could cause problems when he has to sleep somewhere else.
I got great ones from JC Penney. I was told that it is best to put them down in the darkest room possible, even for naps, so they get used to sleeping when it gets dark out.
Yeah - second-time moms, feel free to point and laugh at the first timer who thinks this will have any effect on sleeping patterns.
DD's room is on the front of the house that gets FULL sun all day long until like late afternoon. In FL not only does the sun light up the room it makes it hot! So after the winter we realized her room was way too warm. So we got some room darkening curtains that helped, but not quite enough. So I also got a shade cut at Home Depot to hang up. The shade and curtains stay shut almost all the time.
DD is moving to a new room and she will also have a room darkening shade and curtains to keep it dark.
Re: Room darkening shades in nursery?
I only did them in ds's nursery because we lived in Alaska and it was almost 24 hr daylight.
I don't plan to do them this time. Kid's adjust pretty well. My toddler naps in a very daylight room now and does just fine.
