~~ZERO SPERM / AZOOSPERMIA CHECK IN~~

This is a place for any of you who are experiencing the world of azoospermia.  Whether you were recently diagnosed and are trying to make sense of it all, or you have started preparing for IVF or IUI, or have decided instead to move on to adoption.  Please join in the group by posting! Check in is on Thursdays.

Learning that the chances of having a biological child with your husband are slim to none is not easy, and is, frankly, devastating news.  This check in is a place where we can share how we are coping (or not) with our new realities, provide information we've learned through investigating our options, adjusting our lifelong dreams and plans, and dealing with the situation.

I'd like to extend an invitation to those who have been fortunate enough to experience pregnancy, childbirth, and/or adoption.  Ultimately, all of us desire to create a family.  The experiences and insight of those who have reached that goal will be quite helpful to those of us on that road.

Re: ~~ZERO SPERM / AZOOSPERMIA CHECK IN~~

  • Question of the Week:

If you used donor sperm, will you tell anyone?  We did use donor sperm and are very open about it.  Honestly though even though everyone knows we used a donor people forget.  When I was telling my mom and coworkers (at different times) that the baby is measuring a full week ahead every single one of them said well you know your DH is a big guy (he is 6'3").  I love how accepting everyone in our lives is.

Did you buy any of the "extra's" (if available) on your choices to narrow them down? If so, what was it you were looking for?

We bought the medical history, long profile and baby pic.  All the donor info came as part of a package we did.  We did the photo matching service through CA Cryo and the extras came with it.  We were looking for good family medical history most importantly.  Otherwise we kind of just went with the donor that felt like the best match.  We choose from the best 10 matches that were photo matched to my DH.

  • Hey ladies!

    QOTW:

If we use ds we will probably tell some of our closest family and maybe some close friends.  I hope that we start introducing the concept/language early and you never know what might come out of a toddlers mouth :)  I figure it may be better to tell some of the people we are closest to before that.

We haven't started looking  so I can't comment on the other question, yet.

  • update - beta is finally down to 0.  WTF is 1/19.  scheduling appt with hematologist and hoping to do FET in March.

    Question of the Week:

If you used donor sperm, will you tell anyone?

we have told my parents and close friends. we will tell our children and they can decide who else they want to know.

Did you buy any of the "extra's" (if available) on your choices to narrow them down? If so, what was it you were looking for?

we purchased long profile/medical history, pictures and cd with voice.  i just wanted to see what motivated donor and medical history.  pics to see what he looked like as a child and we've never listened to his voice, i don't know why we go it,

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

  • QOTW:

We are just starting this process.  I know close family and a few friends will know.

I would like to purchase some of the extras so I have as much information to give to my child when the day comes.

  • update- started stims 1/3, in tomorrow for my first follie check.

If you used donor sperm, will you tell anyone? family and close friends know we used a donor and we will be open with our children about it.  we choose an open identity donor as well so that our LOs have the option of contact at 18.

Did you buy any of the "extra's" (if available) on your choices to narrow them down? If so, what was it you were looking for? the basic profile was free and only included medical history, height/weight, etc.  we purchased the 'extras' which was just photos.  it included, toddler, teen and adult.  photos were to find a donor that looked like DH.

  • Update: Cornell Urology reviewed my husband's results and advised us there is nothing they can do to improve his condition, which we figured, but it was worth a try.

If you used donor sperm, will you tell anyone?
We used donor sperm and only told our parents and my sister/brothers.

Did you buy any of the "extra's" (if available) on your choices to narrow them down? If so, what was it you were looking for? The first three times we used Fairfax Cryobank and ordered, Childhood Photo and Medical History.  This time we are going to pick a new donor from CA Cryobank and we will probably order the package.  I didn't realize CA Cryobank had photo matching, so I would like to do that too.

  • Update:  I have my u/s for D-IUI #2 on Saturday.  Freedom Fertility screwed up my order for my trigger, so they are looking to see if anywhere closer to me has it for tomorrow.  If not, it'll get to me on Saturdcay by 1.  We have been hearing about a bad snow storm coming up next week (Tuesday) so hoping the IUI won't be impacted.  Trigger Sunday would be perfect!!!  But we know how planning this stuff goes!

QOTW:  We have told a couple we are friends with because the wife is/was a Egg Donor.  She knows the first cycle was successful-because the couple asked her to do it again!!  I hope that'll we'll be more open about it-I think once it works we won't be able to keep it quiet.  DH is nervous about how *his* family will handle it-we know mine will be awesome!

We used Cryogenic Labs-which has unlimited free access to all their donors.  So we have all the information we can get from the donors profile.  It helped us a lot-they go into a LOT of specifics about features and information.  We were looking for a donor with pregnancies, and then a clear medical history-no mental health or cancer in the background.  We also needed CMV-, and we wanted a blood type that matched either DH or me-we matched DH!

I didn't realize CA Cryobank had photo matching, so I would like to do that too.

It's a great service.  La'Trice Allen does it for them and she is fast.  You fill out a form with any specific features you are looking for and send her a photo of your DH and then she looks through their database and matches the donors to your DH based on their current pics and the info you provided.  Then she gives you a super detailed report on the top 10 matches to your DH.  We also made sure that they looked for a donor with a negative CMV status, which we had to have.

    https://www.cryobank.com/Services/Consultation-Services/Donor-Matching/

We choose Option 2, I think it was $350 or $375.  We only had 3 donors that we wanted her to look at and see if they matched.  La'Trice found the best 10 matches only 1 of our 3 was in the group.  She then ranked them by best to worst match.   As part of the service we got the all the info on 2 donors of our choice, but it looks like now they give you access to all the full profiles for 3 mos.

If we decide to have a 2nd child we will use this service again, since our donor is retired from the program.  It made choosing so much easier!

  • We will tell close family and friends that know about our IF.  We are going to tell the children and will also select a donor that is open to being contacted when the LO is 18.

I would want to do picture matching and come as close to DH as possible.  This is one part that made me cry the most.  I think DH is so handsome and I love his beautiful blue eyes and dark brown hair.  I am so sad to think that may not be able to be passed on to our children.

  • Update: DH's biopsy was a success! The uro said there were sperm comming out of almost all of the tubules in his testicles. He thinks the azoo is being caused by the scar tissue that built up after DH's torsion surgery as a teenager. So, we have to schedule a more invasive surgery (like 2-3 hours!) where they will go in any try to fix the blockage and then also extract sperm for IVF if the surgery isn't successful. The uro gave the surgery about a 60% success rate. We are hoping to schedule the surgery in late April. All this waiting is killing me...

QOTW: If they aren't able to extract any sperm, we will defintately try DS. We will tell our parents for sure, and possibly our close friends. We haven't looked into DS in detail, so I'm not sure what extras we will purchase. With my OCD personality, I'm sure we will get the entire package so we can make the best decision for our family!

  • alclements85- how amazing, that is so great!

We are getting quite anxious to start the ball rolling on our IVF, looks like we might be starting it all in May! SQUEAL!!

QOTW: We won't be using DS but if we did, I'm not sure we would be so open about it. It's such a personal decision and unfortunately our families would react very negatively to it so it would probably be best to not tell anyone. I don't foresee us having to deal with this though because if our IVF doesn't work, we're moving on to adoption.

  • Well, we are finally going to the RE next Friday. Both of us feel it was the right decision. We could waste more time with my ob/gyn and try to do some more natural cycle IUIs, but I only seem to want to ovulate when they are closed and at this rate it could take 6 months! And I really want to get to the bottom of things!

I have to admit, I am terrified that I am going to get some horrible news when I go to the RE. I guess I just got used to news being bad even though we;ve had a lot of progress on hubby's end as of late. So, I am trying to just relax and keep my mind busy with other things.

Best of luck to those of you in the process of IUI/IVF!
