Chelsea Diane arrived Friday, Jan 25th at 6:47 p.m. Here is her long arrival story!
Thurs. Jan 24th @ 7 a.m.: I awoke to two small gushes and immediately ran for the bathroom. I wasn't quite sure if it was my water but after completely emptying my bladder, I stood up and a HUGE gush came out. My water had broken! I was so excited b/c I was scheduled for an induction the next afternoon and really wanted to go into labor on my own. I called my dr and he said to head into L&D but to eat/shower first. We rolled into L&D around 11 am and were brought to triage so the Dr could make sure it was my water. It was, of course, and I was admitted right away. The dr said to spend the day walking and rocking on my birthing ball and he would check me later that night to see where I was at. At this point I was only a fingertip dilated and about 60% effaced. Well I walked, and walked, and walked, and walked. I wasn't feeling any contractions. The nurse made the decision that I should eat lunch and dinner that day, thank GOD! She got the ok from the dr and it was such a relief to know I wouldn't have to go hungry. So, the dr came back on shift at 7 and still no contractions. He checked me around 9 after some more walking and I hadn't made any progress since 11 am. We made the decision to go ahead with cervidil to get my cervix softened up. It was placed at 9:30 and was to stay in for 12 hours. I was told to get some sleep and we would see where things were in the morning.
Friday, Jan 25th: I woke at 5:30 to go to the bathroom and the cervidil fell out! I told the nurse and she said since I was that close to the 12 hours they would just wait and see where I was at when the dr came in. I still was having no contractions so I was preparing myself for the fact that I would be ending up on pitocin. Chelsea was sure being stubborn! Anyway, at 9:30 the dr came in and checked me and I had no change overnight. Pitocin and pennicillin were ordered and we knew we were going to have our baby that day! Within 15 minutes of the pitocin starting, I began having contractions. They were pretty manageable at first, I was able to focus and breathe through them while lying in bed. However, within the next hour they got very strong and painful. I was determined to go as long as possible naturally, so I got out of bed and onto my birthing ball. I rocked and breathed through the contractions while my best friend applied counter pressure on my lower back. DH was great, letting me squeeze his hand as hard as I wanted, and my mom was there telling me how great I was doing. Well, around 1 p.m I was in a lot of pain, and the contractions were coming right on top of each other with no break in between. I started freaking out and crying, and saying I couldn't do it. My DH went out to my nurse and told her I needed an epidural. The dr came right in and checked me- I was only 3 cm! Luckily the epidural was in by 1:30 and I have never been so relieved in my entire life. Everyone left DH and I alone and I closed my eyes and focused on my breathing and thought about my baby coming to meet us. DH talked to her through my belly and told her about everyone that was waiting to meet her and he was using such a soothing voice that I was completely relaxed. Around 5:30 (only 4 hours after getting epi), I told my nurse that I felt like I was being stretched open. She checked me and the head was only an inch away! It was time to push!!!
Here's where the fun began. My dr's were switching shifts and the new one was 5-10 min away from the hospital. The women in the rooms on either side of me were also his patients and also ready to deliver! It was a race to see who could push the best and be delivered first. I was so focused and motivated! The dr came in around 6 and I started pushing. He was really impressed and made the decision that he would stay with me and the other two women would wait. At 6:47 (almost THIRTY-SIX hours after my water broke!), my precious angel was born and it was absolutely the most joyous moment of my entire life. When I saw her I burst into tears and as they put her on my chest I immediately fell in love with her. DH looked so proud and as he cut the cord I thought to myself how truly blessed we are.
Here's the rest of the stats: Chelsea Diane, 7lb15oz, 21 inches. I was able to avoid an episiotomy, and only had a small, first degree tear that required 2 stitches. Chelsea scored a 9/9 on her apgars...she has brown hair - a ton! It actually goes past her shoulders in the back! She is so perfect and breastfeeding is really starting to go well. We had a few rough nights as my milk came in b/c I was so engorged, but once we got through that it has been great. I can't believe she is already ten days old! I will try to get some pics posted really soon, and I can't wait to see the rest of you on 0-6!
Oh, P.S. I was a diet-controlled GD, and I was put on a regular diet immediately following the delivery. They checked my levels periodically throughout the labor. Chelsea had to have hers checked every three hours for the first 18 hours. They were all great and we didn't have to give her any supplements.
