delayed vaccination...WWYD?

first off i'm not trying to start anything here i just want to hear your opinions on this subject.
Ok so i have been following a modified verison of the sears schedule i've done my research and along with our Pedi fell very confident with what we have chosen.
That said it was agreed that the MMR shot could be delayed till mopnkey was 18 months since he doesn't do daycare.
BUT
now we have a trip planned to Costa Rica and i'm wondering if maybe we should do the shots now (we leave the 22nd) since the airport can be if-y not to mention being on the plane for 5 hours.
so i guess my question is would you do the shot now or still hold out till after we come back and he is closer to 18mths.
he will be 12 on the 19th

Re: delayed vaccination...WWYD?

  • Honestly, I would ask your pedi's opinion. We've traveled internationally before DD was caught up on her all her shots and our pedi asked us detailed questions about where we planned to be before telling us what the risks were of not having the shots before we left. That allowed us to have more information to make a decision that was right for our family.

  • This is purely my unprofessional opinion, but I'd stick to your original plan. Obviously you had your reasons for planning to delay in the first place. I'm sure people go on trips with babies before they are even old enough for the vax.

  • I also recommend talking to your pedi.
    DD1 4.14.10
    DD2 8.22.13

  • You need to talk to your pedi, there are guidelines he can talk to you about based upon the country and their risk factors for any diseases he's not vaccinated for.
  • I'd check with Dr.  I'm not in the medical field.  Just my opinoin...I have heard that some children have adverse reactions like fevers and such following vaccination maybe you wouldn't want that to happen while traveling.  Also, just thinking that vaccinations take some time to actually be effective some requiring multiple doses to be fully effective. To my knowledge it isn't recommended to have them timed closer together. To sum it up I think if you had vaccinations now it wouldn't fully benefit your baby. Having traveled to Costa Rica myself I can say that if you are going to be at a resort/hotel that you are not likely to come in contact with anything that you wouln't here in the U.S.   I'd watch the mosquitos and bugs around the babe -- they are extra "grande" there !
