Christening Gowns

Where did you get yours and how much where they?  The ones I've found online are expensive (around $50).  That's alot of money when you have to buy 2, especially considering they'll only be worn for a couple of hours.

Also, for those with boys, did they wear pants or gowns?  We're Catholic so I think a traditional gown would be nice, but I'm not sure what most people do nowadays.

Re: Christening Gowns

  • Our boys are wearing gowns. My MIL had them made for a baby shower present. They were made out of my mother's wedding dress material! The christening blankets were made out of MIL's wedding dress.

  • My son wore a romber type thing.  My daugher wore a gown.  They were both near $50 and it felt horrible spending that much on them, but I guess it was worth it for the day/occasion (they sure did look cute!).

I wanted to have them made out of my wedding dress, but waited too long to figure that part out.  :-(

It was so thoughtful. I bawled like a baby in front of everybody when I opened it and realized it was their dresses. Especially because my dad died when I was 6 so I kind of feel like he is included now because it was from their wedding. It was so sweet of them to get together to do this for me.

  • Our boys just wore sweaters and pants.

If you're looking for Christening outfits, I know JCP and BRU carry them.  No clue how much they are though.

  • One if the boys wore mine, which was also worn by my DD. My mother bought the other one for our other twin. Since my MIL could not find my husbands. I honestly don't know where she got it from.

  • DD will wear my dress and we'll buy one for DS since the one from DH's family (his brother wore it but he didn't because they "forgot" to baptize him until he was a teenager) is missing.

We will more than likely buy a Feltman Bros. gown for DS.  Girly and expensive, but I'd like him to have one to pass down to his kids, like DD will be able to do with mine.

  • My two boys wore gowns made out of my wedding dress.  I had a friend who loves to sew and she cut up my dress to make the two gowns (not like I am going to wear it again).  She only charged me $30 for each of them. I thought that was reasonable considering all the work and detail she put into them.  I have pictures of them in my blog, I believe.

  • My mom made our LOs Christening outfits. DD wore a gown and DS wore a romper (pics in blog). Honestly that's probably the cheapest way to go - having someone make them, but whether you have someone crafty enough (I certainly am not!) is another story. I totally agree with you on the price though. $50 seems outrageous, especially when you have to buy TWO. If my mom wouldn't have made them for us I probably would have just dressed our LOs nicely which is also acceptable in our church. GL!

I wanted to use my dress!  However fil bought them their gowns during his last trip to spain.  I was still pg at the time, and hadn't found out the genders yet... so he got them gowns.  They are gorgeous!  A bit girlie, but I think to be expected.

I've seen gowns at Macys, Dillards, TJMaxx & Marshalls.  Buy Buy Baby has them too... at least at my local store.

  • Thanks ladies!  Sounds like alot of you used wedding gowns.  I think that's such a special idea, but I had never heard of it before.  We paid alot of money to have my dress preserved, so I don't think I'll go that route.
