I was just diagnosed with GD the other day and had my ed class yesterday, I'm just wondering how to get my fasting number lower. I am following the diet exactly and my morning number is 101 and my doc wants it under 95, what can I do to get those extra 6 points outta there? Thanks.
Re: Hello ladies, I'm new to this board...GD ?
Most of what I have heard is that you cant really make your fasting numbers go down. HOWEVER - at the suggestion of one of the Drs I have seen she said to eliminate the last snack of the evening. That didnt help me, but adjusting the time I had my evening meal did help...and allowed me to have a small snack before bed. My fasting was running high 97-100 +, now it is 75-94 most times.
You just have to see what works for you. It took me a good couple of weeks to see what my triggers were. What works for some will not work for others. There are times when I still cant seem to figure out how foods affect my numbers. There are lots women on here that will be very good resources for you!
i'm a couple weeks ahead of you, but i've been having the same problem with my fasting numbers. i just replied to another post, but here's what i've found works for me: i double and triple the protein at my evening snack and take out the starch completely. for example, last night i had a hardboiled egg, a nonfat greek yogurt, a cheddar cheese stick, six almonds, and water (protein, milk, protein, fat). i also took 2 glyburide pills instead of 1.5. my fasting level this morning was 79! we'll see what it is tomorrow morning, i'm going to try and do the same thing tonight. it's frustrating sometimes, having to figure out what works and what doesn't, but as we get more pregnant/hormonal, we have to keep making adjustments. that's how i choose to look at it, at least
good luck!!!

good luck!!!There are a lot of thigns you should consider with this, and I think talking to your doctor would be the first step. What works for some with GD does not work for others, and there are many varying degrees of GD...
Eating dinner slightly earlier can help. But many doctors and GD educators will likely tell you NOT to skip that evening snack. Going too long without eating some amount of carbs for your body to burn can produce ketones, which you can test your urine for. Ketones are not good for baby - they are produced when your body burns fat instead of carbs and should be avoided during pregnancy. Watch what you are eating for that snack, but don't skip it....
You could be someone who needs to go on insulin or an insulin pill (Glyburide) to help with fasting numbers. I am on a small dose of glyburide because my body and diet alone could not regulate my fasting numbers. It happens, and there is nothing you can do about it. Talk to your doctor about your options - a lot of women are against the Gylburide. I have found that it works great for me and has through two pregnancies.
Good luck!
My fasting numbers were always a bit high (my doctor wanted them under 90 and mine were usually 94-97) and they put me on glyburide. It's the smallest dose, and it has made a world of difference. Now my fasting is always within range.
My doc put me on Metformin with meals to help my body's response to its own insulin. Like others have suggested, what works for one person may not work for another, but these are three things that help keep my fasting levels under 95:
1. Finishing dinner before 8pm.
2. A short 10-20 minute walk after dinner.
3. Dairy as the main component of my nighttime snack (greek yogurt or a glass of skim milk). Don't know what it is about yogurt & milk, but my morning numbers are always best when I have one or the other.
It really is different for everyone. My fasting numbers were above 95 (the number given to me by the educator) so I cut out my late snack or ate one without any carbs, but that put my fasting numbers even higher. Then I tried a snack with my full allotment of carbs and the next morning my numbers were below 95. I tried it again and the same thing happened so that is what I do now (fasting numbers have stayed much steadier and between 90 - 97).
I discussed it with my dr the other day (he is just concerned with fasting numbers being under 100). He said that there have been some studies that showed people's blood sugar dropping very low in the middle of the night, triggering the body to dump glucose into their system which in turn caused their fasting numbers to be high (same thing happening with taking medication before bed for some people).
This is what I was told too, when I expressed my initial reservations about the bedtime snack requirement. I am never hungry then, but I force myself to eat regardless.
I have been eating cheese and some high protein/whole grain crackers at 10pm at night and my fastings have since been under 90. My doctor and nutritionist said to not let more than 9-10 hours go in between meals, in fact, they said like on weekends if you sleep in, to get up in the middle of the night and have a snack too. Sometimes I'll get up at 3am-ish and drink some soy milk.
